I'd like to try some but 7024 only comes in 50lb boxes. Anyone want to sell me a pound or so?

Ian

Why bother? What will 7024 do better than 7014 (I have never used 7024 but do love 7014)?

I do know 7014 will weld in all positions where 7024 is for flat horizontal only. Only other thing that I see is 7024 deposits even more metal than 7014 does which I guess could be useful in some applications for increased coverage and speed. This might be useful in a factory setting for increased coverage to lower cost, but to a hobbyist not sure I see the benefit.

Oh man its been so long, I'd say very early 1980's since I've run any 7024. Wire feeders just about killed this rod in construction. But I'd say 7024 is faster than 7014. but other wise pretty much the same. For someone who has never run any 7024 you nailed it!;)

Yer right, 7024 is a high deposition rod, iron powder flux. They're great for welds around baseplates on a rail for example as you can drag the coating or anything else where it's difficult to hold the rod above the basemetal. The bead, on a fillett weld, is flat to slightly concave with a nice wash to both surfaces. The only thing you have to watch is that there's a lot of slag so you have to be careful it doesn't get ahead of you, a very slight uphill helps. When you get the heat set right the slag just peels off on it's own with no spatter.
If you were closer Ian I'd give you a few pounds, if you want you can drive up, Nova Scotia isn't that far....really
