OK, having a few issues with the PT (what is new). I have a couple of hose leaks that have come on strong. I think it is the PTO out and in. I think the reason the hoses have failes is due to the fact they get stretched out when the arms go fully down. When getting new hoses I am going to add 6 inches unless you guys think that is a bad idea or there is a better idea. Specifically the hoses are failing at the circles of steel holders they pass through at the arms.

Anyway. Steering. With the PT off I can kinda turn the steering wheel. If I am not mistake, that means I am bypassing somewhere. granted it could be the control Rams. I have replaced both of those a few years ago. But when i got the PT the steering blew a seal. Now I have been chasing down the oil leaks and i took the cover off to look at the steering mechanism and it had a bit of oil on it. I think it is failing again. Anyone know who makes it? I am a bit bent at PT at this point and really don't feel the need to send them money (be over charged) for something I can get repaired locally.

Not sure what steering valve you have. I suspected mine a couple years ago, but it was fine. I needed to lube the ball ends of the steering rams really well. I could have sworn the noise was from the steering valve, but it was not. I also had oil drip from the valve when off and turning it manually, but not when the tractor was running. Read the thread. As I recall, a steering valve is craZy expensive. Ah, yes.... here's a link to that thread from 2012....
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/power-trac/261334-pt425-steering-valve-noises-print.html

A quote from the thread...
"Called local JD dealer to inquire about rebuilding this valve. We poked around until he found the 5 port model. He said it was from a 332 and internal parts are no longer available for that valve, but seal kits are. There are 5 seal kits @ $50 each for a total of $250 just for seals, plus labor. It would be better to buy the whole valve new, which is still available.

Then he said "HOLY $^&*#!!!"
I said, "You just looked at the price of the valve new, didn't you?"
He said "Yeah. $980."
OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! "

I went down this rat hole. My advice: Don't.

What I learned is that if you crank the steering wheel in the depowered state, it is possible to push oil past seals. This makes it look like the steering mechanism is leaking. If you don't do that...

After I quit "testing" the steering, it quit leaking. As always, YMMV.

All the best,

Peter

I believe my steering box is a char=lynn steering box with PB.

Similar to these.

Surplus Center

Seal kits for about $42.

You don't have to be exact, just match the flow and if you need the PB port.

You also have to make sure the ports on the new valve are on the same side (or, bottom, in my case) as the original or you may have to do surgery to the operators console and/or extend hoses, adapters, etc... just a heads up. ;)

Yeah. I am following Peters recommendation. I have had the control exposed for the past few days and no leaking.

Now I am into tearing apart the Treddle, more to come on that issue.

I did. 2 of them and my wife had one as well. All three just fell apart. Not good.

Ouch. Sorry. I was trying to make light of the fact that you seem to have a lot going on at home these days. I'm enjoying your projects....

I have a nephew in the movie industry. Its feast or famine.... the movie is over and you are unemployed until you get on with the next one. Kind of like farmers and the weather, I suppose.
