Tractor
John Deere 4310 Power Reverser Model
HI Everyone,
my husband & I bought a 2004 John Deere 4310 Model tractor.
VIN#- LV4310P336460

I was wondering if anyone else owns the same model tractor???
I am wondering with the tractor are there different models?
I am trying to pin point specifics on the tractor.

I am trying to figure out in regards to 2WD & 4WD. How do you know which one the tractor model is. Does it have both options or just 1 of those?

Also, I am wondering regarding transmission. with the JD 4310 does it have EHYDRO or HYDRO? I am not sure if there is the 1 option
Also, I read there is: sync shift, epowr reverser, Ehydro.
I am confused in regards to these.

My husband had the tractor running. Then it suddenly stopped running.
I have no ideas if there are safety features on the tractor that will cause it to stop running & not allow it to start up again.
I am not sure in regards to the PTO feature

At first after the tractor stopped running, there was a clicking noise when you turn the key.
I did some research & thought it might be the starter. We replaced the starter.

After, sitting on the seat, & turning the key. The tractor would turn over.
Next it would run for 10 seconds, then stop running.

the battery is perfect.

My husband is thinking it might be electronic related???

On the left side there is a shifter, My husband got it From B to C. it was really hard to shift.
regarding the gears there is A-C, 1-4= 12.
We are not really firmiliar with the gears ect...

Any advice suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Bonnie

The owner/operators manual is available online besides purchasing either the CD or paper version.

Online Operators Manual: OMLVU13193_H2

I've also attached a pdf file with hopefully a more descriptive amount of info you on the tractor you own.

:welcome: to TBN

You are at a good place to get help with your questions.

The files Kish mentioned are a great place to start.

From your post, sounds like you have the synchronized transmission, and not the ehydro.

If so, you will have to use the clutch to get from one range to another. Maybe that is what you meant by "hard to shift".

With the ehydro transmission, there will be a forward pedal and a reverse pedal on the right side floor board. There will also be a range lever on the left to put into A, B, and C range along with the switches to utilize the ehydro (e meaning electronic assist in the tranny). Don't think that is what you have, so don't have to worry about that feature.

There are several safety switches that limit tractor actions.. need to know them or be controlled by them.

Keep asking questions..

This link might help understanding the three different transmissions available.

G'day Bonnie and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

beenthere beat me to providing the TractorData.com information... there's a lot of great info on that site. If you click on the 'overview' tab on that (above) linked page it'll provide heaps of info on your 4310.

Enjoy the site.

I had a 4310 for years, now I have the slightly larger 4510 but it is the same basic machine.

#1- it sounds like you may have the PowerReverser trans. If so the machine should have a sticker on it that says PowerReverser. It will also have a lever on the left side of the steering column.

You do not have a hydrostatic trans, you mentioned a gear shifter 1-4 so it is a geared model.

Look for lever A in the diagram. If you have A it is a PowerReverser, if not it is a Synchro.

#2- do not throw parts at it. The machine has several safety stops built in, one for the PTO, Seat, etc. You need to read the operators manual. If the machine is starting and then dying it is most certainly a safety switch or something simple killing the tractor. No offense but it is probably operator related. That is good though because we can fix that.

#3- they did make a 2wd and 4wd. You can check the front tire size and report back, that will tell if it is 2wd or 4wd. Or you can check for the picture in the diagram. You may not have all these options/switches but if it is 4wd you will have C.

Any other questions please ask. Best of luck, you have an awesome little machine there.

The P in the serial number says PowerReverser to me. As Rye Thomas asked does it have a lever for Forward/Reverse? The fact there is no R on the shifter for reverse as tell me it's a PowerReverser.

For the non starting; make sure it has fuel. Check/clean battery connection (all four connects/both ends of two cables). Make sure PTO is not engaged. Lastly try jumping the battery.

If you can post pictures it will go a long way towards telling what transmission it has and if 2wd or mfwd.

If it runs for 10 seconds, then stops, you may want to check the fuel filter. May be clogged, have water in the fuel or stuff like that. What kind of fuel did you
put in it? If it still starts and stops, you may want to drain the fuel tank, start with a new filter and fresh fuel to eliminate fuel as a problem. It may have had
bad fuel when you bought it or got water in it at some point. Good luck.

My husband & I changed the starter & bought a new ignition switch. Installed it.
We cleaned all the fuses with cleaner, tested the ground wires, chassis
the battery was load tested & passed.
We replaced both V1 & V2 diode blocks & Fuel shutoff solenoid timer module.
There is another hose, it connects 3 ways below the alternator- for the powersteering & hydraulics- We replace that hose.

We checked all the fuel lines.

the tractor now starts; after about 10-13 seconds it will stop running. Something shuts it off.
My husband tried to move the tractor with-in the 13 seconds he had it running, to get it to the shade; BUT it will not move.

We are almost finished figuring out what is wrong with the tractor. Thank you so much everyone for your responses.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, that would be great.

Thanks.

You can "fool" the shut off solenoid inorder to keep it running to get to the shed..
If its a 2 wire sol. just apply 12v to it.. red+, black -
If its a 3 wire sol. it has a START circuit & a RUN circuit..Black -, RED is run & WHITE is start.. apply 12v to the white BUT..
.. get where your going FAST & unplug it.. its only made to have 12v for a very short time before it fries..
OR just take the crappy thing off completely..
They have 2 coils in them..Your RUN COIL might be bad.. or its a relay or safety switch or a loose connection.

Puzzled when you state
We are almost finished figuring out what is wrong with the tractor.

Maybe interpret that to be "at wits end". Don't give up.. folks here will try to help. But you indicate you are replacing things randomly at the problem without first knowing what is wrong.

But here are some more things to ponder.
