Anyone Rebuild a Log Splitter Valve?

My detent equipped log splitter valve has started to leak oil out of the rear of the valve when it is returning. So far it is a pretty small amount, but I don't want to let it get critical so I'm planning on disassembling the valve to try to figure out what the cause is.

Has anyone here had a splitter valve apart and if so what seals the piston as it moves in the cylinder? I assume it is an "O" ring??

Any tips on what to look out for when taking the valve apart? Any idea of where to get parts? I cannot find a PN on the valve and it was purchased so long ago I cannot even recall where I bought it or who made it. From looking at it I think it is a Prince, but obviously that is just a SWAG.

If it is a Prince brand I believe they show parts breakdown on their website. Typically Just O-ring seal on end of spool but you will probably have to dismantle the detent function and they usually have have some steel balls than can vanish on you.

A hydraulics shop could rebuild it for you,,

BUT:

1) the charge to rebuild would be $200

2) the cost of a new valve is <$100

normally, a new valve is the low cost alternative.
Even if you find the correct o-rings, there will be rust pitting on the spool, or some other issue with age.

So far it is a pretty small amount

I'm in the same boat but I don't mind the leak, it's quite small and the way my splitter is made it drips on the ways and lubricates it. Saying that, one of these days I'll be forced to rebuild it so I'll be watching this thread..........Mike

I did, spent $25 for kit with 5 "O"' rings and instruction sheet.... Followed instructions and was very cognizant of all things being clean and inspecting everything. Got it all together....Still Leaking.... Easier to throw a quart of oil in reservoir (old splitter uses DEXRON II) now and then. Maybe some day will replace valve and then maybe not, it appears previous owner cross threaded nipple into cylinder bung and it also oozes oil there too.... Afraid of opening up another headache of a repair...

Pay close attention as the detent ball with the little balls that “detent” it.
It’s a bit of a puzzle putting it all back together with the spring pushing on it.

Thanks to all for the replies. I have considered just replacing the valve and in the end I may just do that. One problem right now is the more "high end" American made valves are out of stock. I don't see the value in putting a cheap valve on when is just a matter of time before it fails.

The good news is we just finished putting up our wood for next year so this is not a high priority. But, I know myself well enough to realize that if I don't get on this I won't get it fixed until I go to use it next year.

I checked on a rebuild kit; $45.00 plus shipping and I'm not 100% sure it is the correct one. I found a new valve on Amazon for $125.00 with shipping included so I ordered it. Thanks again for the advice.
