My '11 Sierra 6.2 is coming due for it's first oil change..Was debating running Mobil1 in it...Anyone else do this, and how has it worked out?...I've always used Castrol GTX and have had great performance from that. Debating whether the added expense is actually worth it or not.

I used Mobile 1 in a '98 Astro & had no oil consumption or any engine problem in approx 100K miles. The Shop Foreman had actually advised at the start it was an unnecessary expense. Obviously have no way of knowing if things would have been different using the generic shop oil.

Used Mobile 1 in my '03 Corvette - all 7,000 miles in 8 years, so I know it was really working overtime there.;)

Unless you're really in for the long haul with your '11, even if you do the changes yourself, it may be hard to justify the added expense.

You can always treat it like "prayer" - won't do any harm to try it.

I do all of the maintenance myself, so labor isn't an issue...I pile up the miles and usually run them pretty hard. The last 3 Chevy's went to 200K with no oil consumption using Castrol...Ran the last GMC to 100K on Castrol too. No problem there either.

Maybe I answered my own question with your help...

I do know that if I'm going to run synthetic, I need to start early...I've seen people start using it at 50K and have valve noise etc...Pretty common thing there. Once they went back to standard oil, all odd noises went away.

I run the Mobil 1 EP (extended protection). It is even more expensive than Mobil 1, but the huge advantage of 15,000 miles between changes ends up being a net savings. Not to mention the labor I save.

I will not ever trust a shop to put synthetic oil in my truck. When I request a product that costs $6-7/quart and they can substitute a standard oil for $1-1.50 per quart, and I will never be able to tell the difference, the temptation is just too high. I know there are honest shops, but the effort to do the change myself is so small that I will not lead them into temptation.

Run Shell Rotella T6.

You can read up on Bobistheoilguy. UOA's show it to be great stuff.

I've been running Mobil 1 fully synthetic in my RAM and Pacifica for 100k + each changing every 8-10k. It still looks pretty brownish at change and still feels slippery in the finger test. I've used Castrol before in many autos with good results but I can never find it in the 5W-20 that my vehicles require.

I've used Mobil 1 since 1967, my first new car('67 Dodge RT, 440 Magnum) and have never experienced an oil related failure, or problem for that matter. I believe it to be worth the expence, which, if you buy it at Wally world is not all that significant, coupled with the extended drain intervals. I change mine out at 10,000 mile intervals, and it is still registering above the "add" level in my '07 Tundra with the 5.7 engine. I tow a fairly heavy trailer during the summer months, somewhere around 12,000#(two antique pulling tractors(3500# and 4500#)+ the trailer. I use 0W-30(even though Toyota recommends 5-20) for cold starts during the winter and the additional heat generated by summer towing(neither the tansmission nor engine heat gauge run differently) towing or not. I recommend anyone who uses a vehicle as I do, use synthetic of some brand

I used Mobil #1 but after using Royal Purple at work in some real abusive situations on some big gear drive and seeing how well it preformed I switched my F350 over to it and it is running cooler, quieter, and 2.5 mpg better mileage.:)

I have not ever run Mobil 1 but about every other Synthetic out there.

My Nissan Titan came from the factory with Valvoline Synthetic and I have continued to use it.

If you like Castrol use there synthetic. They have a great special going on at WalMart right now. I got it for $17.99 per jug. I picked up 10 jugs to stock up for customers boats.

There are no bad oils out there. All meet or exceed the OEM's specs so what ever you chose will be just fine.
