My automotive mechanic in LA is a great guy. Fair, talented, one of those who tells you what to fix and what to wait on...

We were talking oil as I saw he had cases of royal. Mentioned this to him and he starts going off on how wonderful it is. How it reduces engine temp even further than mobile 1.

I know, I know, oil conversations are heated, and unless you spend lots of cash, subjective. But this stuff is $2 a quart more than Mobile 1. I wouldn't mind running my oil cooled diesel at a lower temp and if this does drop it that would be exciting (I feel I lost 10 degrees when I went from dyno to mobile 1 but it is subjective).

Royal Purple is a great oil. PAO synthetic stock with great additive packages, it will out perform M1. There are equivalent and better oils for less money. An important fact is RP just got bought out by Calumet. Calumet seems to focus on big box retailers so there is no way to know if they will change anything. I've tested against RP, I'll stick with my Schaeffer's.

I run it in all my vehicles. Have over hundred thousand on my titian just over twenty five on Altima.
I change it every eight thousand miles or so.

What do you mean cooler, you can't or shouldn't get cooler than your stat temp. Engines are made to reach a certain temp and hopefully stay there.

Well, yes, I agree with you on the temps conversation and thermostats... I was referring to my oil cooled diesel (a deutz) where controlling temps in an agricultural environment can be a challenge.

Their diesel oils(CI4+ at least) are among the best made per my UOA testing. Really does not take a spectacular oil to outperform M1 anymore. I would not suggest running $7-$9qt oil unless you are going to do analysis to set you intervals to get your money's worth out of them. If you are the type to stay close to factory service intervals you'll not tell the difference in any name-brand oil today. They are all great for factory service intervals in 99% of applications.

I'm going to go against the flow here. Disclaimer : First, I have never used RP. I have used or am using Redline, Amsoil and Mobil1 Synthetics. I am a member on several internet boards regarding vehicles and equipment. Many people swear RP is as good or better than other synthetic branded oils. I can't say one way or the other. I have also seen several reports (on different boards and by different members), claiming that they had engine failure or serious engine damage occur after using Royal Purple (spun bearings predominantly). I have seen some of the data they provided and do believe these were oil failure related issues. But I am no expert. Was it RP's fault or not, I can't say. I have no real data to support what I am saying other than, I don't see the same type of failures mentioned using other premium synthetic motor oils, only RP. But I am not sampling the entire internet either. I guess all I am saying is, go in with your eyes open and find any data that you can. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of folks using it and having absolutely no problems. I just wanted to present the other side of the coin.

Hi Carl,

What's the benefit to running your tractor at a lower temp with synthetic oil? I have not had my tractor overheat, however my hood is very hot to the touch after I have been working on it for awhile, but I also want to ensure I am not over working my tractor. Thanks..

Royal Purple is probably one of the best group IV based synthetics out there and it gets run in alot of applications that the engines are pushed past their limits thus engine failures and spun bearings are commonplace. When I began doing oil analysis on my agri-equipment David @ RP was extremely helpful with technical issues. They just do not make a bad oil. I run their Syntractor III hydro fluid in two of my tractors and it is the toughest fliud I have run. No not cheap by an means. Once again though if you are staying close to the equipment maker's service intervals, high-end synthetics are probably not going to be cost-effective.

in LA I just spent $11 for a single quart of mobile 1 0-20 for my Honda... the royal would have been cheaper.. not happy
