I'm looking for anyone who has used a 4-6' 3 pt. rototiller on a Ford 8n tractor. I'm considering purchasing one but I am wondering if 1st gear will be geared down enough for it. Looking up on a table I found online for the 4 speed 8n, the ground speed is 2.77 MPH (with engine at 1500 rpm) in 1st gear at the recommended 545 RPM for a tiller. I'm wondering if 2.77 MPH would be slow enough to get proper tillage.

Thanks for any input,

i have ran a five foot tiller on many 8n's we redone and it worked good didn't have any trouble with it

whodat526,
What type of ground did you use one on? The travel speed of the 8n wasn't too fast? Did you ever try using one in heavy sod? Do you think if I loosened up the sod with a quack digger first and then used a rototiller would it work better?

The general feeling is that the ground speed on N's is too fast for a tiller. Maybe in ideal soil it would work, but they are not generally considered a good tiller tractor.

I would not recommend a tiller with a 8N, However, I have a few customers that are doing it in ideal soil conditions (not compacted sod). Anything you can do with the soil to loosen it up before tilling would be a plus. Ken Sweet

I agree.. the 8n 1st gear is too tall for a tiller unless you have either a rear howard post tranny.. or an everett post trany.. they slow ground speed but not pto speed ( note that sherman, hupp and other pre-trannies will not work ).

if you want to run a tiller.. at a minimum get a 5spd tractor.. if not an 8spd.

i have own over 20 8n's and was a ford tractor dealer for 25 years and have sold 8n's with a tiller and they pull them good where we are at with just the regular 4sp trans it didn't matter what type of soil

but a tiller with reversalbe tiller tines works the best

You are the first person I ever heard speak favorably about an N with a tiller with no post aux tranny... and I do mean -ever-.

they plow and disc great.. IMHO.. the gears are way too tall for tilling in anything but beach sand..

that cause nobody else knows a good tractor when they see one the 8n's are a way better tractor then any compact ever made the are easy to maintain and cheap to operate and parts are always going to be available i have worked on some 10 year old compacts that already had parts discontinued
