probably if he cut those front wheels off.. or made them turnbuckle so he could drop the disc in the ground it would work better.

Give Soundguy a break. His knowledge and expertise on Fords is the best you will find on this forum. Ken Sweet

Soundguy: I am with you.

I have a Ford 8N and it is not a good tiller tractor IMHO. 6' tiller on hard ground works very poorly on an 8N. 1st gear is too fast. It maybe ok for previously worked ground. In hard ground, I have to just crawl using a 6' tiller with tractors having much more hp than the Ford. The 8N is also a little hard to control the depth of the tiller. Yes, the skids can be set lower to keep the tiller from digging too deep, but often it is just easier to lift the 3pt a little rather than changing the skids for different soil types.

Maybe your soil type is much looser than the black dirt (hastings and crete soils) I have in my area.

Soundguy is pretty much "spot-on" on this topic...and in most others too, IMO. (AND....my father too was a Ford dealer for over 25 years  if that has any bearing on reality.) Around here.....you wont find many tillers hooked to the rear of the N tractors.

I own a five foot tiller and use it on a JD 790....it pulls the tiller just fine at about 1 MPH in the heavier soils I have. I can go a little faster in the sandy stuff.

Of course there are all kinds of soils and lots of ways to work the land. Yes....you can till in the sand at higher speeds....but you won't mix the soils very well when you speed over them as you are forced to do with the N tractors. Then too....live PTO is pretty nice to have. :D

Wow, that's painful to read.

At the end of the day, regardless of what anyone's father did, a person has to decide for themselves if a particular tool will work to their satisfaction for a job.

All you have to do is google it, the overwhelming consensus is that the N series tractors are not a good match for a tiller. The reason is always the same, ground speed is simply too fast in 1st gear when you have the PTO up to speed. There are probably those with Sherman transmissions that have better results. The ground you are tilling is also a big variable in it, as others have said.

I think the lesson here is that while you CAN hook a tiller to your N and break some ground up, you will more than likely not be satisfied with the results.

you wouldn't want a sherman.. they are pre-trannies.. like the hup, and F&T's. they replace the transmission input shaft, and thus effect ground speed and pto speed.

What you want is specifically the rare and fragile howard aux post tranny. it was specifically designed to lower the N ground speed and not effect pto speed. interestingly enough, it was sold to be used with the howard rotovator ( a tiller! ).. even back then people new the N was not a good tiller machine as stock.. thus a special post tranny was made to help it out.

Another post tranny, the everett was made to allow for a trencher attachment for the N. again.. slow ground speed, and normal pto speed.

soundguy, Can these rare trannies be found anywhere and what would a guy expect to pay one?

rare fragile and expensive.

They can be had.. but you pay for them. I'd guess 1000$ for a howard tranny is the average prce.

A buddy of mine specializes in the aux trannies like shermans, hupp, F&T, etc. he buys parts, sells parts and recons the trannies. Another buddy an amature machinist are looking into repoping the gear cluster that makes up the howard so they can be more available.

The reason they are 'fragile ( not really ).. is that with reduced ground speed, people think it is a pulling gear and try to do stuff like pull stumps, instead ruining a 1000$ tranny.
