Anyone with a rotary cutter over 8\'???

Hey everyone,

I have a 50hp 4x4 tractor and currently am using a 7' bush hog on a 3pt hitch. My tractor is right at 7' wide and I am trying to cut some trails that we have made with a bulldozer. I am finding myself having to put the tractor into the bushes to cut the sides of the trail because the mower deck doesn't hang wider than the tractor. I was thinking about maybe going to a 8 or 9' bush hog instead. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with something that large? If so what brands would you recommend taking a look at? Also should I consider a pull behind or a 3pt hitch? With my last tractor I had a 15' batwing but it was way to large to fit in the areas that I am needing on this new property. A 8' or 9' unit would probably be ideal. Also I would be looking for a medium to HD unit. Thanks.

I know that Soundguy bought a Howse 10' cutter, but I believe he's pulling it with more HP than yours. He reports it is a very good cutter, and was not real expensive.

Have you tried moving the cutter over with the sway chains so that it cuts more to the side?

Loosen the opposite side's sway chain and tighten the side you want to move out to the side. Don't go so far over that you bind the PTO shaft or hit the tires, and make sure you tighten well the both sway chains so there is not movement of the cutter.

You can get a few inches out from the tire on one side this way. I do it all the time to get up close to the houses and fences as I only have a 4' cutter and tractor is a little wider.

With the swivels on the PTO shaft, there shouldn't be any problem at all for you to do this, but as I said, just don't bind anything.

i use a 10ft pull with my kubota m9000 and a 6ft 3pt with the 4330 40hp i prefer the pull if don't have to back up in tight spaces.you should be able to handle 8ft pull type with 50hp.

Have you looked into any of the semi-mount hydraulic offset mowers? The ones I've seen let you shift the mower deck 20" or so to one or both sides of the tractor.

I looked at a 8 ft Kodiak last week. I was very impressed with the workmanship, fit and finish. If I had a little more tractor I would own one. I'm only at 40 PTO HP.
