does anyone know of a place that would rebuild the transmission on a troybilt tiller?
i would consider shipping the transmission, with wheels an all accessories, and oil removed to have it rebuilt/repaired as needed...

There really isn't much to those machines. With just a little bit of mechanical ability the everyday guy can rebuild them.

Also, unless they are run without lube there should be nothing wrong with it except for maybe some worn out seals.

Look on Ebay for parts and diagrams, you would be amazed at what you will find.

i have one that the bearings appear to be bad in the end where the tines are: theres lots of slack in it on both sides: i have bought a couple different old books and cd's with all the info: i just tend to break about as much as i fix..

I rebuilt one for a friend last summer. I do lots of car work, but never one of these before. Manual scans are downloadable online. I say read up and go for it. Or pay me a jillion dollars :) Seriously I might consider doing it, but I'm not a pro at it....I'd say DIY. PM me if you are desperate :p

There's a link to the service manual somewhere in this subforum, I believe. It's a scan so it's huge - ~60MB.

2 places I found to get parts:
Replacement Parts and Accessories for your Troy-Bilt tiller - CustomPartsInc.com
Partstree.com - Genuine replacement parts for Toro, Echo, Husqvarna, Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt, Lawn Boy (Lawnboy), lawn equipment (lawn mowers, saws, blowers, trimmers, snow blowers) and Tecumseh, Kohler and Briggs and Stratton Engines.

I'm sure there are others.

One thing to remember is they aren't making these anymore, so parts will become limited/unavailable in the future. We did a total rebuild of the tine gear box including all seals and bearings plus some parts that got damaged (why we were fixing it). Whatever part is damaged now, I'd do that whole subsystem (tranny for you, I guess). It will not be cheap, but then these tillers weren't cheap to begin, and you will probably get another 15 yrs or more out of it that way.

I agree with the earlier post that you can do it yourself with little problems. I bought a manual back in the 80's that explained in great detail how to rebuild the transmission and tiller drive portion of the Horse tiller. If I remember correctly, excessive play can be caused by bearing wear that is taken up by shims under the cap at the very back of the tiller tube, where the depth adjuster is located. Keep looking for manuals, that is your answer.

Look on EBay. There are a number of manuals available, including on CD for less than $10.

i have all the manuals needed: just not to confident in my mechanical ability any more: few years ago would have tackled anything: i am going to price out all the parts for the rear tine area an decide if i want to do that: found a good rotohoe tiller with an 8hp kohler for $250 the other day: i hear they are pretty good...that might me my best option.
