Good info to know. That's another reason I don't trust quick lube places. They buy everything on the cheap to increase their profit. I have a friend that owns one and he usually pays around $.90 per quart for his bulk oil. You may be spending more at the parts store for oil, but you get what you pay for.

Never heard of the Oils they tested.

The ones they caught in Michigan they said were sold as quick lubes........

They can show up in out of the way places - independent corner stores, and dollar stores - places where people go in a hurry, and want something cheap. Sometimes they may actually meet an S_ class spec, but unless your engine was made around 1930, it ain't the S_ spec the OEM called for !

Ken - do you have access to a breakdown of those 20% failures ? Or, is API selling the report ?

Yeah, I always want to see the data.... Ex. some of those failures might be just due to an oil NOT being API approved. That may indicate a problem, or, it may not.

To be clear - yes, I know there are some problem oils out there, including the bulk ones discussed. API's case here would be stronger if they provided a detailed breakdown of how those 20% failed.

If you're asking me...No, I don't have that info. To tell the truth I really didn't look for it . Don't take this the wrong way but, I posted for the ones that come here and tell others ( members looking for oil info) ''that oil is oil'' Oil synthetic or dino isn't created equal. There is a reason cheap oil is cheap. Quick oil change places that use BULK oil is like opening a box of chocolates ,,, You never know what your going to get
