Guys, I apologize for the question that I'm sure has been asked a thousand times on this site, but I've searched and not found the answer yet. So here goes. By the way, everything I know about tractors I've learned on this website (it's great!). What is a Yanmar? Are they all used? Where do they come from? If they are used, why would anyone buy one (price, I would guess)? What is the reliability of these tractors? If compared to new tractors, what would they compare to? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Correct me if I am wrong, they are used there is no dealer for new ones in the states, not anymore, unless it would be a grey market tractor. Saying that not everyone wants to buy a new tractor(there has to be a market for used tractors),the Yanmar are good machines. They are made in Japan,John Deere uses Yanmar engines in the JD 4000/4100 series compact tractors.

A web search for "Yanmar tractors" will yield a ton of info on Yanmars, however, after reading your past posts I don't believe I would recommend them to you. You have to be a pretty good, and avid, shade tree mechanic to own and operate a 20+ year old Yanmar. Most dealers will not work on them, and unless you are willing to pay a premium, rivalling new tractor prices, for a "reconditioned" tractor, they are going to need work.

They are used, but generally real low hours, for how many years old they are. And the use has been in rice fields, so it is light work, so they are not worn out, anything like a US tractor, of the same years and hours would be.

Yanmar entered into an agreement with John Deere back in 1972. Yanmar then built most all of the 40HP and under JD compact tractors until 1998. They still build the 790 and 990 and supply engines and other parts for the 4000 series. For a few years Yanmar sold tractors in the USA. They then agreed with John Deere to stop marketing tractors in the US and in return got another decade or so of contracts building John Deere's tractors. Take a look at a JD 770, 870, 1050, etc and it says built by Yanmar Diesel Engine Company, Osaka Japan.

The quality is outstanding, and unless you get one that is fairly worn, you should enjoy relatively trouble free use. Most of the people I sell Yanmars to aren't mechanics and do not need to be. Of course we fully service the tractors before they go out and find any little problems as well, so there isn't any work that needs to be done.

Most of the units in the US are Japanese models, not USA models. Some of the models were built almost identical for the Japanese and American markets, but most are not.

Any decent mechanic can work on a Yanmar. They are relatively simple. As stated above in a previous post though, some dealers will not work on them. It sometimes takes a few phone calls to get the right part and some tractors dealers don't want the hassle....plus they are a little miffed that there are so many of these sold, which cuts into their business

Where you buy from is important. Be very careful of "factory reconditioned" tractors. Many are rebuilt rough tractors. Buy from a reputable dealer that sells clean low hour original machines. Nothing wrong with a thouroughly serviced machine, but if it already needed to be rebuilt it has had a hard life.

I agree with Daves comment about being easy to work on. I bought a YM 2310 that had a cracked engine block, which had been welded. I bought the tractor knowing this( I got a $1000 off). After about 50 hours of my own use, I noticed the engine overpressurising the coolant. I checked and found a blown headgasket. I got the parts from Len Sheaffer (VERY HELPFUL), but I could have gone to any of the other full service dealers on the board, and gotten what I needed. I replaced the headgasket. After repriming the fuel system( another story) the tractor started and has run great. I grew up around tractors, and learned to work on cars from my dad. He had learned from his dad. I do have the repair manual for the YM 276 which is a very close American version of the YM 2310.
