I live in the country & recycling isn't an option in our trash pickup. My mom lives in town, about 5 miles from me. I collect everything I can out of my trash & recycle it in w/her. Paper seems to be the biggest thing we have. I use my paper horse feed bags & fill them to the brim w/paper. If I miss a week I can take those to a local school that has 3 big dumpsters for paper.
Our family of 4 has 1-2 small bags of trash most weeks. In fact, we split our trash pickup w/our neighbors. It's $100 for 3 months (weekely) pickup. $50 is much better! I haul ours to the curb & put out an empty can for theirs. They also have a family of 4, don't recycle & have much more trash then we do.
Also, if you have lots of feed bags, either paper or the vinyl type, use them as a weed barrier in gardens. Works similar to the black stuff you buy, just make sure they overlap & make them thick enough so as they breakdown, they continue to do their job.
