OK out there. How do I get rid of Armadillo's. I have a house in East Texas. Golphers have been the only problem so far. I've only owned the land a year. I just started to treat the lot for grubs. I've heard that if you get rid of the grubs, the golphers will go away because you got rid of the food source. Now for the last month I have had an attact of the Armadillo's. It has been going after my neighbor's yard as will. I've heard they are also after the grubs. So how do I get rid of the Armadillo? Suggestions?

Rod, I have absolutely no help for you /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I must say though, I got a chuckle out of your post. Perhaps the same chuckle you might get when us northerners talk about stacking snow with the FEL. Good luck with your problem /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

22 rifle and a flashlight. My neighbor enjoys shooting them. I often hear the sound of a rifle at midnight in the summer. He typically gets a dozen or so during the summer months.

They don't see good, but have a good sense of smell. Gotta approach from downwind. Once, I got one with a ball bat. I slowly walked up within 3 ft of him, gave it my best Babe Ruth impression, and BAM! Home run!

I'm glad you asked this question. I wish I could find something to put in the landscaping to encourage them to go to the neighbor's yard. Tried mothballs once. Didn't slow 'em down a bit.

Anybody have any tried and true recipes (other than lead in the rear end) to deter the critters?

My wife and I visited friends in Texas about 8 years ago. She is an elementary school teacher and was developing lesson plans on armadillos.....sort of a take-off on Jan Brett's children's books. She was hoping to find some live armadillos during our travels in Texas for picture taking but all we found were dead ones alongside the roadway. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif This was real disappointing. But, if you want to kill them, I'd guess you might want to just take your auto out on the highway, look for their crossing points, and hit them when they cross.

High velocity lead poisoning works best, but my wife tagged one with a pick ax one night in the front yard, what a racket! Our biggest problem is the possums that like to come up on the front deck and eat the catfood. I bet I have drilled a dozen holes through them(the possums, not the cats) and the deck in the past year with the 9MM. Unlike possums, armadillos are deceptively fast when startled, but are easy to sneak up on. I have not heard of any other good methods.

Shoot 'em. Stuff 'em. Sell 'em to the tourists /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

OK RANCAR, let me see if I understand you correctly. All I have to do is get TX DOT to build me a nice 2 lane road thru my back yard and across my neighbor's yard. Then jump in the o'l pick up, sit back and wait until somewhere around midnight to 2 AM. When those critters start to cross the road, I just put the peddle to the metal.

Great idea!

Shoot them!

I bet i could fill a dump truck with all the ones i've killed! but like it has been said night is the best time to get them. late in the evening just before dark you can find them good.

if you use a shotgun use a #4 and close. small shot tends to bounce off the armor. a 22 works well! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I used to have a pair of dogs that loved to chase them. they would play tug of war with them. when they were tugging you could whack em with a shovel or kiser blade and they would rip in two! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know i am little whacko about it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh i have to go to my PETA meeting bye! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Come on...be reasonable. No I didn't say build a road through your backyard. But, you can travel the surrounding road network and look for armadillo crossing patterns that intersect with your backyard. All I know is when we were in Texas we saw dozens of dead armadillos alongside the roadway. They were dead because they got whacked by cars....whether by accident or not I don't know. I do know we never saw one live one.

Sorry if you thought this was a stupid suggestion. You were looking for solutions and I offered a possible solution. Take it or leave it. Nuff ced by me on this thread!!!!

Didn't mean to offend you. I was just pulling your chain! ! ! You're right, about the only time you see them is dead in the road. Skunks also seem to meet the same fate this time of year.
