Arrrgh! Dealer didn\'t fill front axle after svc.

Soooooo, in the continuing saga of "What's wrong with Iowa2210's tractor today?", I was cleaning off the tractor after mowing and though I would check the front axle. This is after about 5 hrs ago they put new bearings on the right side while fixing the problem documented in the Clunk, Clunk, Clunk thread.

Well...... Nothing on the dipstick, stick my finger in, nothing in the axle housing! I cracked one of the drain plugs and fluid started to come out, so there is probably some oil in the final drives at the wheels, but this means that the differential has been running dry, and I have used 4wd for almost all of those 5 hrs.

So what should I do? I'm temped to call, and demand a new axle. If the balk at that, I want a 5 year warranty on the front axle and have them completely drain and serice the axle.

What would you do?

I'd call the dealer and tell him what you found. Then, see what he has to say before you make any demands.

Not much use in getting into an adversarial situation with the dealer before he has an opportunity to square this away.

I agree. If he's a decent guy, as he should be, advise him and get his reaction before you take the adversarial approach.

Had a similar incident when I got my 955, it was 'used' (if you call 143 hours on the clock used), and he told me it'd been completely serviced. I checked everything before taking it out the first time, and discovered the front axle was almost a pint low. When I called the dealer, he about fell out of his chair apologizing. Told me he'd take care of any problems that might come up in the future. Apparently, the fluid takes a while to settle in there, and you can get a false full reading.

Not being a wise guy, but, as I'm sure you learned, you can't trust anyone but yourself, so, double-check everybody else's work. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
