An update on the hand and fingers Doc took out all the pins today I have a removable splint and I start therapy tomorrow thanks to everyone for the kind words

Thats good news. I am a little confused ... did you fall and break them or did they get in the blower?

In my world we don't have snowblowers BUT we have alot of PTO powered equipment and alot of good advise from all on here ... Be carefull and always shut down.

Okay, I didn't know when you said "I missed a step" if that meant you missed the step off the tractor. You are one lucky man ... I mean you still got five to count on ...

I have repaired many fingers from just such accidents. Everyone reading this thread needs to understand that if the machine is jammed, you can turn it off, disengage the PTO, click your heels three times. EVEN IF IT IS OFF IT JAMMED UNDER TENSION. It may relieve that tension on you. Yes, even if it is off. Don't stick your hand in there until it is freely turning on it's own. Broom stick, rake handle, stick, dowel- anything EXCEPT YOUR HANDS can be used to clear a jam. Still blows my mind to see so many snow blower injuries each year.

One more hint.

Even with jams it's a good thing to turn the tractor off.

But if you have other people around, it's easy for them to forget and turn the tractor back on at the worst time.

Take the key with you. That way they can't do a start up when you're out of sight in the machine.

Glad you are on the mend ! The bad snowblower calls look like something out of the movie Fargo where the guy was running his victim through a chipper, never a good time. I keep my blowers sprayed with silicone or WD-40 can't remember the last time I had a clog,I still keep a trowl and a piece of pick handle handy just in case.

The poor dog must poop himself every time you fire up your tractor.
My dogs have kept their distance when I'm blowing snow.
I try to keep them min. 20 feet away.

Your sons will always remember the night Dad had a claw for a hand.
I hope the extraction of your hand was quick.

The potato gun story is full of irony.
Let's hope he played the triangle and not the guitar.

I'm going to try WD-40 in my blower.

Stay safe everyone!
