Any way you can get a pressure gauge in there, and see what pressure is being developed at the outlet of the pump?
Also.. most vane pumps die pretty quickly when run without oil... even minutes without oil... If it took a long time to prime, that might have done the pump in.. Or if there was feed problems starving the pump.. that would have done it.
I personally have had great luck with napa filters.. but that doesn't rule out an odd problem or two.. especially for one that was just matched up.. etc.
