After many weeks of waiting for my dealer/saleperson getting the CORRECT size of toothbar for my BX23, I finally got the right one. What can I use to drill a hole fore the mounting bolts? Or what is the best way to mount it?

If it is a large hole use a hole saw. Cuts the bucket real fast and easy. Mine is bolted on with 1" bolts. The hole saw made sort work of making those two holes.

Go to your local hardware store and purchase a bi-metal hole saw (its usually white) the proper size for the bolts you will be using. Loader bucket sides are fairly soft metal and the bi-metal hole saw will go thru it like a hot knife thru butter. Installation time should take about 10 minutes.

At Home Depot, I found a 3/4" hole saw called the "Aggressor" by BLU-MOL. It attaches to a 3/8" hole saw mandrel with intergrated 1/4" drill bit in the center. The description on the package for this 3/4" "Aggressor" hole saw reads: "The Aggressor Bi-Metal Hole Saws employ an aggressive 4/6 variable pitch tooth style for the fastest cutting performance. Made of the most wear resistant M3 tool steel, these hole saws will easily cut through metal, nail embedded wood and stainless steel.

Just position the bucket at a comfortable working level. Put the washer in between the toothbar and the bucket. Line up by banging with a rubber mallet. When the washer is properly aligned trace the circle with a felt tip pen. Remove toothbar and washer and punch a starting dimple for accuracy Begin drilling with hole saw with integrated ¼“ tip.

In about five minutes, you will be understanding why everyone on TBN raves about their toothbars.

Good Luck!

Maybe it just depends on what size bolts you're going to use to mount it. The hole saws are great, as the other guys mentioned, but when I bought my toothbar, it was going to be mounted to the bucket with 5/8" bolts, I didn't have a hole saw of that size, but I sure did have regular drill bits in 5/8" and 3/4" sizes, so I just put the toothbar on, took a punch to mark the middle of the hole where I wanted the bolts to go and drilled the two holes. Then I put a large washer on the bolts, inserted them from the outside of the bucket into and through the holes in the bucket and toothbar, added another washer and a nut. Some folks mount the bolts from the inside hoping, at least, to keep the threads cleaner, but I wanted mine from the outside, so the only thing sticking out beyond the end of the bucket was the bolt head. Either direction works.

Only thing I can add to Bird's post is that mine is slotted where the bolt goes through the toothbar. I mounted mine with the bolt positioned at the end of the slot farthest from the bucket front edge. This way it will stay snug against the bucket.

Vlpena,

Mounted mine two nights ago. 1/2" hole so I used a 1/2" metal bit since I didn't have a hole saw that size. Basically did exactly what Bird described in his post. Make sure it's snug on the cutting edge of the bucket and mark it following the Bird method. You'll be surprised how easily and quickly you'll cut through.

I'm having two 2x2" steel plates welded on the outside of the bucket for a little extra strenght, but it's probably overkill.

Enjoy one of the most useful attachments you'll ever buy! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I used to be a tin knocker and can't tell you how many different bits, hole saws, vari-bits and lubricants I used to purchase and go through for a project. Someone mentioned here about TSC prices on drill bits and that *cheap* 7/8" drill bit I purchased from them has drilled a couple dozen holes with nothing but a 1/4" pilot hole, some WD-40 and a 1/2" hammer drill (regular drill of course). 1/2" flat bar, bucket sides.... you name it.
I hope to get it out and use it shortly when I get my toothbar in for the new ride.

Well thanks to all the TBNers that offered all kind of assistance in this VERY EASY task of attaching the toothbar!
Here is the first of three photos that I took while completing this task.
This one is marking the holes...
