ATV/mower death

I saw this article in the (Toronto) Globe and Mail today: Grieving family 'on cloud nine' after Bautista's gracious gesture - The Globe and Mail

The paragraph that caught my eye was this one: "Bautista, the Blue Jays right fielder, would learn that the boy was riding on the back of an ATV being driven by his father, at their home in Fennimore, Wis. Derek lost his balance while standing up to pick a walnut off a tree, fell underneath a rotary bush lawnmower, and passed away on site. "

Does anyone have details on this ghastly accident? Hindsight is always 20/20, but the possible downside of carrying a youngster on an ATV while towing a mower should really be foreseeable and therefore avoidable.

Agreed, most accidents are actually negligence when looked at with the wisdom that comes with hindsight. The worst part is, the wisdom doesn't stick around... Mankind learned to make knives hundreds of years ago, there are still people running and falling on them. The world is simply an unsafe place, caution can never be stressed enough.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones that lost...

Our kids are turning 16 so we have made it this far. I have tried to be safe with them and drill it into their heads and now they will start driving and out of our sight. These stories still tear me up. Kids can do the strangest things in a flash. When I was backing up to the deck to unload something I felt a big thud. My then 8 year old son had ran and jumped on the bumper to 'ride'. Had he slipped it would have been bad. I did not know he was even outside but I am sure what I was going to unload was a toy or something that had him excite.
