ATV or UTV

My wife and I each have Honda 350 ATVs and a Kioti Mechron diesel UTV. It is great to haul wood in the dump box. 4wd and CVT tranny. Hi, low and reverse. Works great and it was the cheapest of all UTVs around. Havent used the Hondas since we got it last fall.

I am currently looking at the new Honda Pioneer that is coming out. It is about the size of our Rhino except with a full cage and a bed that converts into 2 extra seats so it can carry 4 people safely. Great for us to take the kids yet still have a nice sized dumping bed when needed. Maybe the machine that gets me to sell the Rhino and upgrade!

Thanks for all of the suggestions you definitely convinced me a UTV is the way to go. I will be at the house for a couple of weeks in August and will look for one. I think there is JD dealer and a motorcycle place nearby that sell UTV's.

If you look at Deeres, definitely give the 855D a looksee. Just bought one since I wanted a diesel...not interested in speed, just reliability. The 855D does have a CVT transmission. Since I'm new to CVTs, it does take some getting used to, but the Gators have have them for years, so I guess they have any bugs worked out.

They really do not gave much for bugs, if just like Polaris, they are a snowmobile design... PROVEN and solid as a ROCK!!

Around here it's hard to pick up a good UTV for $2000 but there are many solid 4x4 name brand ATV's in that price range.

I have a RTV1140 which has the 2 row seating or bigger dump bed feature. Have had it for a few years and have no reservations about recommending it.

I've been looking at the Polaris Sportsman X2. It has the dump bed with a pop up second seat for dedicated 2up riding. Brand new they are only available in 550, but a few years ago they made 850s and 700s. A UTV would be nice too, good luck in your purchase!

I also struggled with choice of ATV or UTV...Polaris Ranger vs Polaris Sportsman. Bought 2010 Ranger XP 800 which is the full size...60" wide...with three wide front seating (w/seat belts). Bringing in today for full fluid change...about 100 hours and 1000 miles. That is using mostly in working on my 40 acres of woods that we purchased about the same time as the Ranger. I am SO glad I bought the Ranger. I use the bed ALL the time for hauling tools and everything else...and it rarely goes for a ride without 2-3 grandkids along. The three wide seat is well worth the extra width for my use. I have a 6' wide trailer that I think is 10' long. It has steel side walls and I can pull the front tires tight against the front sidewall and just tie down with one ratchet tie...doesn't move. If you have land they are a real work horse AND lots of family fun. We also ride our local roads out to dinner about 10 miles away. Side-by-sides are legal on county and township roads...just supposed to keep as far right as is safe.

While at the Polaris dealer today I always worry that I might "discover" that I need a regular ATV also...but I will stay strong and and mostly look at accessories for the Ranger.

BTW...they have expanded the smaller footprint Ranger (I think 50" wide) and offer in engine up to the 800cc (I think). I would still want the three wide for grandkid hauling.

If money was not a factor I think most all of the older set with their jumping days behind them would prefer a UTV hands down. With nice used ATV's in the sub $2000 range they are a good option for many however.

Having had ATVs for years and a UTV since 2004 (one of the first Rhinos 660, then later a 700) I love UTV's. I recently sold my Rhino and ATV both and bought a new 4 seat RZR. The ATV, while super nice, was never ridden. We just always took the Rhino - comfortable, wife and I can both go, and some extra room to throw stuff. Now with the RZR 4 seater I can take the wife and kids, get there FAST if I want, and have a great time doing it. I am getting a hitch mounted basket (the rear car style cargo carrier) so I can stick it on the RZR if we want to haul some junk around (have the tractor for real work or hauling)
In short - buy a UTV they are great
