I wasn't sure what topic to post this under, so if I guessed wrong, I apologize...
Went to an auction a few miles from my house last week. I was totally blown away by how cheap things went. This guy had a JD 955 w/ Loader and canopy, 4x4 HST with 440-ish hours. It was a decent looking tractor. Only issues I noticed were a small crack in the fiberglass hood, and the rear turf tires had some chunks missing on the inside edges, looked like they ran it without adjusting the 3PH restraints and the arms banged into the tires. The tractor and loader only brought $6950. Quite a bargain compared to the $10,000 +/- you see on ironsearch.com and other places. He also had a number of implements that also went cheap.
-5' MMM for the JD- $100
-JD 666 3PH snowblower- $190
-Older 5' bush hog, some rust, etc, but very usable- $75
-Rhino 5' BB, great shape- $75 (would have been less had I not run it up!)
-Older 6' rear blade. No idea on the brand, very ugly, but a heavy beast. I bought for $15. Couldn't say no for that price!
- Section of spike harrow appx 4' x 4' with a 3PH welded to it. I couldn't pass it up for $5!
He also had a 2 bottom plow, 2 springtooth harrows with 3PH, and a 3PH seeder in good shape but less the PTO shaft, they couldn't get an opening bid on any of this stuff!
He also sold a 1977 Cushman Truckster with cab and hydraulic garbage dumpster. Not pretty but did run and work- $200.
Ahh, the regret. If I had been prepared to spend about $7000, I would have bought the JD and my smaller MF would be parked on e-bay about right now.
I guess there are two morals to this story. 1- If you are having an auction, don't have it at 4PM on a Thursday. and 2- If you do go to an auction at 4PM on a Thursday, be ready to buy!

Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose and sometimes the booze gets ahold of you...
I would have liked to have found that rear blade at an auction near me for anywhere close to that price!

I should visit Nebraska... people around here will pay $120 at auctions for something you can buy brand new at $85!!!

With the housing market going the way it is, I think you are going to see a lot of steel on the market very soon. Gentleman farmers (like me) who have to sell (not like me at this point) cause of over extension and low interest rates.

So off the the auctions and maybe we score...

The internet was one of the worst things to happen to auctions. Used to be every sale on ebay was a steal. Then prices got run up enough that a lot of things aren't that much of a deal, especially after considering shipping (for alot of items, not all). So a lot of auction companies have jumped on the internet and everyone thinks they're getting deals on the "k-rap" that really isn't worth half of what people are paying...IMHO.

Ain't that the truth!! I went to what is called "The Young Farmers Auction" same thing... Stuff I could buy brand new for less w/o the buyers premium on top of the hi-bid... crazy...

I guess its directed towards young farmers because old farmers are too smart to get caught up in the moment ???

One place I've found for deals (but this is only for North Carolina; don't know if any other state has this  ) The NC Dept. of Ag. has a place that farmers sell to other farmers for free... no dealers allowed. Sure they sneak in; if I find any, I turn 'em in :D

I've gotten deals on Craig's List but you have to be fast, really fast

Man o man are you lucky. The last three auction I went to, the scrap guys started the bidding. At the prices you were looking at, I am surprised you didn't rent a truck to haul it all home.

I have found that the best time in central PA to go to an auction is in winter, especially when it is cold and raining. No one goes. I did manage to get a few really good deals that time - it wasn't a steal, just solid profitable deals.
