Since I'm burning up the forum today....

I purchased PT's auger with the 6" bit. After it was in I noticed the auger bit
head looked alot like the 12" bit head at TSC.

Guess what, It fits perfectly...for only 134.00 as compared to $260 for a 12" from PT.

Works great too!

Jusy FYI...

Which TSC auger series? i.e. do you have a part number?

Thanks!

I am confused. When you say 'auger bit head' are you referring to the hydraulic motor or do you mean the auger itself?

I have two PT augers, a 14" and a 30". Someday I mwill try to post pictures of what one looks like after 80+ hours digging tree holes in our Ozarks soils.

PT doesn't have an auger with carbide teeth and when I looked for another brand carbide toothed auger I discovered that PT's 4" diameter auger shaft is NON-STANDARD and the power head will not accept any other brand auger.

Just IN CASE anyone at PT is listening their augers should be made so that when the auger shank is FULLY inserted in the power head socket the bolt holes line up. It is a pain with the larger augers trying to manhandle them and align the bolt holes when one must simultaneously slide the shaft in and out searching for the right insertion depth so that the holes are not only aligned radially but linearly as well.

Sorry, I'm auger-illiterate: I'm speaking only of the auger itself. Not the power-head.

Peter, Here's the part # and description from TSC: SKU Number: 2100254
Spiral Auger; Ring Type; 12 in Size; Used With Post Hole Digger. It has replaceable cutting teeth too.

Funny thing is the 6" auger from TSC has a 1/2" W lip around the "top" of the shaft that prevents it from being used with the the PT power head.

I agree with you that a little planning would have gone a long way.

Could you cut yourself a short piece of 4" pipe to slide on first, like a collar, so that you only have to do the radial search?

All the best,

Peter

if they fit tight, you might run into problems aligning them if one part wears more than another. Also the manufacturing tolerances would have to be greater.

For many items that take a pounding or can expand from heat, they do not make it where one part bottoms out against the other.

Good point- you could cut it out of rubber tubing, or just replace it when it wears...

My brush cutter adjusts the height by moving a series of rings above or below the caster wheels, which gave me the idea.

Just my $0.02 worth...

All the best,

Peter

Hi Peter,

I was thinking more in terms of why PT would not want to make it an exact fit when it bottoms out. I think a slip collar is fine.
