Note: the auger can float up as it drives the hay into the feeder forks. This gives the hay stream to the bale chamber a compacted density that leads to consistent bale formation, especially with very fine grasses found in 3rd cutting (for example).
I often run the baler stationary to rebale busted bales, loose hay and unrolled round bales. The feeder system is safer for me, too. The auger drive has shear pins to prevent a blockage from ruining the machinery.
