I have used a Bush Hog PHD 2101 with a 12" auger for the past 15 years for setting wooden fence corner post and H braces. It has done well if I keep the cutting edges sharp / replaced as well as the cutting tip.

I have switched from 8"+ wooden post to 3-1/2 metal post, so I bought a 9" auger from Everything Attachments, so there was not as much hole to pack or fill with concrete.

Disclaimer: I live in SW Missouri, where our dirt is more clay and gravel that actual dirt. Once I get to about 18" I hit clay and rock...

The spiral tip on the new 9" auger is not holding up, I destroyed 2 of the Speeco spiral tips this last weekend I drilled 4 complete holes and 4 half holes, had to finish the 4 halves with a rock bar and clamshell post hole digger - I'm too old for that. :)

I called Everything Attachments today and they do not offer another type of tip other than the spiral and could not offer any suggestions for replacement. I'm not blaming EAs spiral tip, think I have the wrong tool for the job. The cast spiral tip can't deal with the rocks and gravel. But at $202 it does hurt a bit.

The 9" auger has a 2" female end where the Speeco fits. Does anyone make another type of tip that uses the 2" shaft?

2nd part of the question: Does anyone have any suggestions of a different auger / tip that may work better? I am going to stop by Bush Hog dealer this afternoon and see what they sell their 9" for.

3rd part of the question: About SSQA Hydraulic augers that fit on the front of a tractor. I have LS XR4040 (40hp, 2015 model year). Anybody used one on the front of this sized tractor? The LS flows 12.4gpm, 4.2 for the steering and 8.2 from the pump. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I have a lot more holes to drill finishing up fence this year and a new holding pen in the spring... Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated!

I drilled just over 50 fence posts and never broke a tip in rocky soil. The tip was was pretty worn by then though. I don’t generally immediately jump on the manufacturer, but that equipment seems suspect imho.

Was it the same type of tip I was using?

It was (is) cast iron, spiral like yours. Not from the same mfg though. I believe mine came from a Tractor Supply like company that went under years ago.
