I am tired of the 5 gallon bucket brigade for fueling up the tractor. I have been looking at fuel tanks and electric pumps for the bed of my truck to make the task easier. Anyone have any suggestions or pros and cons of different makes and manufacturers?

I purchased a 100 gal. fuel transfer tank last summer at auction and replaced the pump with a 110 volt pump from Tractor supply. I then mounted the whole thing on 6x6 skids so I can move it with my pallet forks. The tank normally lives in my machine shed but could, if necessary, move to the back of my truck albeit a 110v power source would be necessary at a remote location.

The benefits of not having to shoulder five gallon cans to fuel up equipment are incredible. No spillage of fuel and the speed of re fueling are on the top of the list. Secondly, my propane/fuel guy delivers off road diesel (the red stuff) so there's no highway tax. The filler nozzle can be locked so no worry about fuel theft.

My brother in law and I both have 105 gallon fuel tanks with 12 volt electric 15 gpm pumps with 10 micron filters. Mine has an auto-shutoff nozzle on it which keeps me from running the tans over. The pumps wont actually pump 15 gallons per minute thru a filter, more like 5 due to the restriction but it fills my tractor tanks pretty fast. I just bought a regular truck battery, set it on top of my fuel tank, hooked up a battery minder to it so it stays charged. I keep my tank inside with my enclosed shed with the boat and lawnmowers so it limits the heating and cooling cycles of damp night air. Had it 4 years and never had any issue with water. Brother in law, keeps his under an open shed but still no problem with water contamination.

Recently my fuel distributor said that he was upping the minimum purchase to 250 gallons, so my brother in law brought me a 275 gallon TOTE Tank ( the plastic with steel frame around it type that all kinds of chemicals are delivered in. This one had some kind of epoxy hardener that I first flushed with water then flushed with some gasoline. The gasoline cut out the residue that was left. So the guy comes to fill our tanks and we take about 200 gallons. BIL asks if he is going to charge the $50 surcharge for less than 250 and he says no, so we didn't put any fuel in the tote tank. I still have it next to my other tank and ready for diesel if I have to use it.
It was free for the going and get it from a chemical plant in Arkadelphia. I can get as many as I want. They used to wash them out clean but now they just sell them as is when they drain out most of the stuff. I see folks selling them (or at least trying to) for $150 on Craigslist. I am sure they are for free at lots of places that use the tote tanks as they are no refund on them and one time use.

We're in the process of hopefully buying a +30 acre farm this weekend. If we can make it happen, I'll be buying one of these Fill-Rite 15 gpm transfer pump with filter kit for my RDS aluminum 90 gallon aux fuel tank on my F-350. Fill-Rite FR1210G - 12V DC 15 GPM Transfer Pump + FREE FILTER KIT - FR1210C FR1210G

RDS makes both aux and transfer tanks. Here is their site: RDS Aluminum - Automotive & Marine Fuel Tanks

They have a number of vendors, including Northern Tools. To get free shipping, I ordered my aux fuel tank (72118) from a local vendor and had it shipped on their regular freight date (about once every 2 weeks IRC). If you can't find a local vendor, just call RDS, they'll let you know who is local to you; they are very responsive people when I dealt with them.

Another option was to order via Northern Tools, but then go pick it up (assuming they don't have it in stock). A lot of RVers have the RDS aluminum aux fuel tanks for their pickups and they love them.

Good luck!

If you have a pacific pride near you, they sell off road diesel and you can buy as little or as much as your truck can carry. (haz-mat restriction not withstanding) My FIL uses a 100gal tank and electric 15gpm pump and does just that. I have a 275gal steel tank on skids with a hand pump and it works just fine, it recently started leaking so it may get replaced with an electric one!

Thanks for the replies...I am looking at a 70 gallon diamond tread tank with a fill rite pump. I was hoping someone here has had a good or bad comment about it. Pacific pride is a fuel distributor...they do business in south ms as well. I work in a refinery and make diesel for a living....it is my preference to not use red diesel in my tractor, not gonna start a fuel war again but i only use taxed ulsd. Thanks for the links on the fuel tanks...they actually have very good prices compared to my local truck accessories shops, definately making a purchase soon.

I think Pacific Pride stations are only in PA. I could be wrong. I've been debating getting a 50 gal. tank/tool box combo to keep in my truck as long as it won't interfere with my gooseneck hitch. I plan on filling it with on road diesel as well, just for the simple fact that if I wanted to fill my truck with it I can.

My only recommendation is to go with an aluminum tank if you view this as a long term investment.

I just bought a 55 gal transfer tank and manual pump to fuel my tractor and generator. I had to shop a bit harder, but found an aluminum tank for $385 versus the steel ones at $250 (in that 55 gal size). Right now DeeZee has a $50 rebate on aluminum transfer tanks which brings the cost down to $335.

I got a GPI lever action pump (does about 0.5 gal per stroke) since I didn't want to mess with wiring and I need exercise anyway. But for larger quantities, electric is the way to go. Added a GoldenRod filter with water trap.

I mounted everything up on a heavy pallet. I'll try to grab a pic later.

I dont know if they are out of state or not? I guess I assumed that "Pacific" pride meant they came from the west coast? lol

Your not to far away from me diesellineman.

Mud Mechanik- The choice to run on or off road is up to you, I was just using the off road at a local fuel station as a reference in case you were worried about having a minimum delivery made to your home. They sell the off-road at almost the same price as the bulk delivery. If you dont use a ton of fuel a year it doesn't make sense to get a bulk delivery.
