AVG Anti-Virus Software

Has anybody heard of this, <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm?session=1b193fddfcad76911491d48490b2b9b7>AVG Anti-Virus Software</A>? Does anybody use it?

I've used it for 6 or so months now. It's OK. Updates automatically (at night).
So far, haven't had any viruses.

We had a nasty virus that infected our server and 5 out of six workstations. The virus would crash the workstations every so often, and cause strange problems in general. The kicker was it it somehow hid from virus protection software. It got right past Norton and Innoculate (both updated automatically). We downloaded a trial version of PCcillin, and that didn't fix it either. PCcillin had a listing of viruses though and downloadable files that would fix them. Man, was that a long night. My business is completely paralized without computers, so I wasn't going home until they were fixed for next day's business. It took one computer genius, myself, and a helper untill 3:30 A.M. to fix it. I got home about 4:00 took a nap and came back in at 8:00 A.M. It's times like those that make me miss my old 9 to 5 job. Anyway, that's a long way of telling you that PCcillin has a free downloadable trial version of their software. Also there are many free trial ones at download.com

I use pc-cillin on my computer at work. my personal computer at home, and my father's computer at his house. My father computer has problems with pc-cillin pop3 scan. I've been e-mailing tech support for almost a month and they don't have an answer. So I'm a bit fed up and might try something else for my father's computer. This is his first computer and I alway get to fix what is wrong. So we'll see I'm giving them another week. Just was looking into something different. AVG is supposed to have a different way of finding a virus. Here is a quote from their web page:
"Grisoft was one of the first companies focused on the serious development of a method called 'heuristic analysis'. This approach is quite different from any of the standard methods of virus detection. It no longer depends solely on scanning files for known viruses listed in the program's internal database, but instead added another dimension to let the program work in the same way as would an experienced virus researcher. The program analyzes the instructions of tested objects, emulates these instructions and is able to understand what they mean. Using heuristic analysis, the program is able to detect even unknown viruses. Because it is a virus - it must contain incorrect instructions and methods - which Heuristic Analysis can detect. "

Sounds good?

I must say that pc-cillin runs very well on the other computers and the firewall (part of pc-cillin2002) works great too.

I can't find anything on the AVG web site about firewall protection. Does the product give firewall protection?

Finally decided to try AVG anti-virus software. Installed the free version od Zone Alarm. AVG seems to work well, don't really now how well till you get a virus! The Zone Alarm was a bit of pain the begining. All those pop-up windows letting you what is happening was pain. I got it configured and it seems to be ok now.

After a month of e-mails back and forth PC-cillin decided to move my complaint up to the 2nd level of tech support.

One possible isue with AVG:

AVG checks both outgoing and incoming e-mail (and attachments).
I've sent numerous WORD atachments (.doc files) that were received at the recipient as .dat files.

I'm not sure if AVG is the culprit here. I now shut it down when I send WORD attachments and haven't had any problems.
So, Rowski...I like AVG (especially the price!!!), but you may want to keep an eye on your attachments.

I do this by notating the e-mail "You should receive a WORD format attachment. If you do not receive the attachment, or it is not a ".doc" file, please respond ASAP."

If your e-mail recipients have the same problem as I have described, please let me know. It may be a bug in AVG. We can contact AVG if it is.

I'll give it a try and see if I have the problem too. I didn't get the free version but a 30 free trail version of the pay AVG software. I'll let you know. I'll be at that computer this afternoon. and try sending a ".doc" file. Is it just the ".doc" files or does it do it with all attachments?

I tried to send and receive a .doc file. It did not change it to a .dat file. But I noticed that my outgoing e-mail was scanned, incomming messages were not. So I spent a few hours trying to figure it out. It works (scanning both incoming and outgoing) with Outlook no problems. But doesn't work with Outlook Express 6.0. They have the plug-in for Outlook Express 5.* that is checkable in th e-mail configure settings. I did send the AVG tech support an e-mail.
