avi files and Media Player

I have some avi files which play fine on Windows Media Player 10 on one PC, but on my other PC (also WMP 10) only the audio plays....no video. I tried with Real Player on this second PC, and got an error message that it cannot play an xvid file. I'm unsure what that is....the file extension in question is .avi

I have reviewed options/preferences and cannot see what difference there is. I would appreciate any input or experiential information. Thanks much.

Probably missing the correct codec (encoder/decoder software) add-in for Media Player. A lot of .AVI files come in either of two flavors of MP4. One is DiVX, not sure offhand what the other is. Do a Google search, and you should easily dig up a codec to install. Pretty easy.

Another option is to install VLC- an excellent video player that will play just about any file you can get. XVID is an MP4 video codec (similar to DIVX) and as stated above you should be able to just install the codec for media player as long as media player supports it.

Thank you for the help. Any ideas why one PC WILL play the files? I would assume from your responses that WMP in that PC does have the proper codec then?

OK, Thanks very much. I just downloaded and installed Xvid codec and Shazam!...I now have video to go with my audio. Collective knowledge is such a wonderful thing. I really do appreciate the help.
