Adjusting the valve clearance on my riding mower engine finally made it to the top of my list. I believe the clearance is too large causing the starter to labor. To my dismay I found that I have a B&S twin with an L head (420000 series). It seems that valve clearance is not a simple matter on this motor. Does anyone know what my options are?
Can I buy a longer push rod or valve with a longer stem?
Can I shim a push rod seat?
Lapping the valves would probably close the gap a bit, but I think I need much more.
I just want to know what I'm up against before I pull the heads.
Thanks.
