B1550 Differential Lock Not Working

I have a Kubota B1550D and when I press on the differential lock pedal, the rear wheels do not both spin. When I first got this tractor the lever that the pedal pulls was stuck all the way forward, like in the lock position. I don't know how long it was like this but I freed it up. The lever moves freely now and I have adjusted the rod so it pulls all the way forward but still no locking rear wheels.
Do you think I may have some internal damage? Is there anything else I should check?
One other question, when in 4 wheel drive do the rear wheels automatically lock even without pushing the differential lock pedal?

Were the linkage from the pedal attaches to the shaft going into the differential there is a nut that holds the arm in place check to make sure that nut is tight & the shaft going inside is turning when the diff. lock pedal is pushed down. IF everything is working up to that point then the problem is inside. The diff.lock only works when the diff. pedal is engaged, the 4wd drive being engaged would have no effect on the differential lock.

Botaman,

I checked all the things you mentioned and all signs point to the problem being internal. Does anyone know if there is an easier way to examine the inside of the differential unit to see what is going on? I took the seat off but there still is another unit on top of the differential area blocking any chance of examination.
I am pretty handy on repairs but I'm not a big fan of tearing apart a transmission if this is what is entailed.

The only way to see whats happening internally is to remove the cover over the rear housing, the one that has the lift arms in it.
