I changed out the hydro fluid on my B21 today. I took out the suction screen to clean it. Whoever designed that needs to go back to school...

When I put it back in, it seemed like it was not seated exactly the same way, the rubber O ring was slightly visible. Filled it back up with fluid, and now have a small "drop a minute" leak from where the screen goes in.

Is there some trick to this? Is there a hole or bump/bolt in the reservoir tank that you have to be careful to find and seat the screen? Should the O ring be replaced?

TIA.

Sounds like the O ring got pinched during re-assembly. Yes, you will need to replace it.
When you try this next time put a small amount of grease on the O ring. This should hold it in place as you tighten the bolt.

Tore it all down again today. Turns out the filter must have something in the tank that it "seats" into. Jiggling it around, it dropped down about 3/8". Originally I had the O ring barely showing at the top of the hole/sleeve it went into and the metal retaining clip in the slot above that which is probably why it leaked.

The part that is confusing is this: There are two cut-outs in the filter. Only the bottom one had an O ring on it. Seems like it would be hard for the O ring to "jump" to the upper slot/cut out. Went to the dealer today, their exploded diagram shows only 1 O ring, but it does not say which of the two cut out slots has the O ring. I wonder if they made this part so it could have 2 O rings, and then cost reduced it to 1?

So I'm not sure if the retaining piece of metal goes into the top slot, or if the filter drops all the way down and the retaining piece of metal goes on the top of the filter right at the bottom of the hose. I have it on the top of the filter now, things are not leaking. It's a detail I don't remember during disassembly .

If anyone remembers this detail, let me know .

I took a look at mine. It's hard to tell because there is a hydraulic line that crosses in front of it, blocking my view. It doesn't look like it sticks up very far, as if both circular slots are down inside the tank. I would venture to say that the retaining clip goes on top of the assembly. Besides, it doesn't sound logical for the assembly to float above the seating position.

If it's not leaking, it's working, right?

Thanks for looking!

So far, it looks like it's not leaking. Agreed that it doesn't make sense to pull it up from a seated position. Yes, the hydraulic line in front of it all is a pain, especially when it's time to get the hose clamp off. It's like the design engineers never had to change the fluid or check the screen on this thing... I think you would definatly see if it was higher up, so I'm good to go .

I will put in a 2nd O ring on the next change out, just because when I pulled it out, the top circular slot had a lot of mud in it, and it would be nice to keep that out of the tank when pulling the screen. No matter how careful you are, I'm sure a little something fell back into the tank.

Side note: I'm doing this my self just to save some money. Doing this first change paid for the low clearance oil drain pain I bought. I had my dealer do the oil change years ago, but after what I saw he did not pull the screen . The hose clamp and rubber tube all had the factory paint on there. So that's another good reason to lean to do this myself.

If I had paid the dealer to do fluid change and he didn't pull and clean the screen, I'd take it right back and have him do it right.

The dealer also didn't pull the drain plugs under the rear axel. They had the factory paint on them. I had the dealer do this many years ago. Had some other problems there too. It's hit or miss. This is part of why I've decided to start doing more maintenance myself. I'm also better now at checking work when things do go off to the dealer.

My long term answer was simple. In 2009 I bought a JD 4520 :).
