So checking over tractor doing greasing rounds and I notice this.the wear on the housing is cause by a loose ball connection on a cheap 3 point auger I lent from a friend. No big deal I can replace the housing. I found a high spot on the casting of the auger pto shaft coupler so I'll gringo it down. My real concern it the pto shaft it self What do u guys think the wrapping on the shaft end is from. I've seen something similar on tractors before but normally it twist the splines on the pto shaft. I did a lot of bush hogging this summer I worked the tractor harder than I ever had before do u guys think I coulda damaged it then? I'm pretty careful with my equipment and a little surprised at this. In reality the tractor is prob small for what I'm doing now but, I'm trying to get by and figure out what tractor would be a good step up.

Thanks for the replies

Could the PTO shaft be too long and bottoming out when you go through a ditch or low spot? That can create some major damage.

Ill have to check that i did check it before but ill have to check it again. Your right that can cause serious damage. Eveything is acting normal mybe from the post hole digger? ill check this weekend and post my findings. ive check all my other attachments several times.

im wondering if its operator error on my part the last two holes I dug a used the fel to prop the front on the tractor up in hopes to make the auger dig better im thinking that coulda done it. changed the angle of everything.

We'll i check and re checked. I don't have a shaft length problem. I can remember stalling the tractor once this Summer but tripping the seat switch and the bush hog came to a slaming halt. It's like the blades folded back and shock loaded the pto shaft. I would think the shear bolt woulda broke instead of damaging the pto shaft?
