Hi Folks,
I have an older, (80's), B2800 that I have owned for 10 years with no problems. When starting on a cool morning 3 days prior, it started and sounded like a gas motor when it is skipping. I had the throttle pretty low for starting but when I throttled up it went away and I blew it off. Ran fine that day and the next 2, about 7 hrs total. Yesterday I was working, 3 hrs running time, tractor idling while I shoveled. I noticed a lot of smoke coming from exhaust when normally can barely see any. Backed out and took load to dump it, (50'), then to the barn, (50'). Started the same "skipping" and smoke now billowing on way to barn. No noises, snaps, clanging, banging of any kind were heard at any time. Would this be an injectors issue or something more sinister? Any assistance would be appreciated, I am diesel illiterate!

Thanks

B8200? What color smoke? Water in fuel? Insure a clean fuel and air supply. Simple things first.

Change the fuel filters and check for fuel contamination.

Hi Folks,
Okay, so I changed the fuel filter, drained the fuel and added fresh diesel, same result. New information is the fuel drained was from my 300 gallon tank and was literally the bottom of the barrel. Also the motor runs smooth when cold, still is smoking but not as heavy and starts to "skipping" when warmed up.
Is it possible that sediment made it past the filter and plugged an injector?

Yes, it is possible. That's why you have to change the nozzle on an oil furnace too and don't forget to look at the screen inside the pump if it has any. Also could be dirt inside the injector pump, fuel lines, tank etc. But skipping ony when it is warm, sounds more like an injector pump problem to me. Did you check the air filter? Black smoke comes from either too much diesel injected or engine not having enough air.

Hi sorry to hear you are having issues with your B2800 diesel are relativly easy to trouble shoot 1st they need 3 things to run air fuel and compression normaly and not very often will a diesel miss and use usually when you change fuel filters did not get primed properly and still a bit of air in the system but clears up fast you maybe sucking air some place here is what I do on a lager truck engine especially one where I it hard to crack a injector to see if the s cylinder is fireing just after start uo put your finger on each exhaust maniforld and soon all will get hot don;'t burn your finger if 1 is cooler clyinder is not working .there is actually wax sticks available to do this and now hand help thermometers are more the way . unfortunally diff engines have diff ways to isolate cylinders you may have a bad enjector actually a fuel nozzel . so check the simple stuff 1st . amother good clue is the color of the exhust smoke as mentioed by another

I believe I located the problem. After finding the taking Lindsey's advice about checking the exhaust manifold, I cracked the nut at the top of the injector on # 3 when the engine was skipping. Nothing happened but when cracking the nut on # 1 & #2, the engine died quickly. I'm going to by a set of 3 injectors and replace them.

So you cracked #3 no change in engine noise and fuel came out? Then it is the injector. For me I'd send all 3 injectors away for a rebuild.

Justwanted to update. Had a diesel mechanic check and said to run a little bit and see if straightened up. Found out the head gasket is blown. Oil showed in the radiater. Thanks for input.
