Hey to the Brain Trust,

And older friend of mine (since moved away) has a B3000 (I forget the year, but it's like 2011, I think?) and he called me, because it's making what he feels is a strange noise.

(EDIT: Title should read "Clacking Noise..." not "Clunking Noise...." Sorry).

He said it only occurs upon engine shut down. As he's most definitely not computer literate, he asked me if I could help figure it out, remotely.

I can't, so I'm asking you all for any suggestions on where to start (he's "allergic" to dealers, and doesn't have one, close, anyway).

He describes it as a "clacking" and, when I asked how long it went on for, he said he didn't know, because he can only hear it when he has new his hearing aids in. LOL

I explained that what I meant by "how long it lasted..." was each time it occurred, and he said about 1 second, and made like 10 "beats" or "clacks" in that second.

He had a neighbor listen to it and the neighbor said it was just the normal sound of a diesel/hydro tractor shutting down.

Does any of this sound normal? Or cause for concern?

Thanks all.

My 33 hp Kubota makes all kind of noise when it shuts down. From the limited explanation I can only guess it is normal sounds. Hopefully he is current on his fluid changes.

I'm on my 5th bota diesel....and everyone made a rattle/clank/clack noise of some kind on shutdown. The engines shudders a bit when the fuel gets shut off. My old F3060 the whole machine shook when the fuel cutoff occurred. I wouldn't be concerned... but without hearing what he is complaining about it's impossible to say for sure.

sandyc and Kanook,

Thank you, both, for your thoughtful reassurances. I realize, based upon the limited information available, that it's tough to say more, with confidence, than you have. But I appreciate the input you have been able to provide.

My friend is most appreciative, as well, but we both welcome anyone else's thoughts/observations, going forward, as well.

Re: fluid changes: unfortunately, there's somewhat of a "question mark" there: to my friend's knowledge (since he is not the original owner), the first oil/filter changes were done on schedule and, for some reason, the 500 hour changes were done early--approx. at 200 hours.--right before he owned it.

But he has no way of verifying this, other than to note the the current filters are NOT the gray originals. (In other words, the P.O. could have run the original fluid/filters out to about 200 hours, and then changed them, right before my friend bought it).

IF this were the case, should he be concerned about the machine's longevity? Especially in light of this "clanking upon shutdown," which does appear that it could be normal, based on the above comments?

Personally, I don't know if the first, recommended service was 50 or 100 hours, and if it was only filters, only fluids, or both.

Can anyone clarify re: the specs. of the factory-recommended service intervals?

In other words, IF the original fluid/filters were not changed until about 200 hours, and he's got this "clanking upon shutdown," is that cause for real-world concern, or not? (And I realize this is purely an opinion-based question--he was just thinking perhaps he should SELL, if fluid/filter services were delayed until 200 hours. But he IS an honest guy, who would disclose this uncertainty, if he sold--he's just like that...).

Thanks much, on his behalf--he's a good guy, who would fit in well here, IF he could see past his intimidation of computers.

Thanks--we welcome any further comments--"scary" or otherwise--LOL. :)
