I've been looking for a little brush-hogging tractor for a hilly piece of ground and didn't want to spend much more than $2,000. But I just found the following ad on Craigslist and it seems interesting. Problem is, I've been reading up on old Massy's, Internationals , etc. and didn't expect to find a good Kubota in this price range. So now I have an oppportunity but no knowledge ( a typcial problem for me). Can anyone give me their thoughts on the following ad:

kubota B5100 diesel 4x4 tractor - $2,500

Here is a sweet little kubota. It is 4x4 diesel. The pump was rebuilt last winter as well as new rings and bearings. It also has a new front output shaft. The front tires are new and the rear 1 season old. It has a 4' finish mower and a 5' push/pull blade. The tractor is set up for front hydraulics. I have only the 2 atachments for it. It runs super! Maybe could use a new battery it goes down after 4-5 days.

Those early B models are rugged little tractors. I had a B6100E that I used for 20 years without major problems.

Sounds like a good deal.

I could be wrong, but I don't think B5100's were available 4x4. I had a B5100E - I miss it's ruggedness.

The only problem with that is the HP of the B5100. I believe they are only in the 11-13 HP range... less on the PTO HP. You could brushhog with that... but it would have to be with a very small cutter and if you have much area to cut... it will likely take a real long time.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Been looking for many months at older tractors then found a b5100e 2wd belly mower and 1000hrs for $1900.

All I have is 1.34 acres back yard / old pasture. Light grading, bushhog, later on tilling in deer plots.

Are these durable tractors past 20years old? Can parts be found? Is the tractor a DIY for repairs?

I have a Kubota B6200e.

They listed the engine as 15HP, so maybe it has 11-13HP at PTO. It has a MMM that is 60". I've mowed things with the MMM, i.e. brush hogged, one shouldn't(overgrown fields, hunting paths). It still runs like a top after 26 years of use and some abuse.

I finally rebuilt the mower deck 2 years ago. It still cut great, just had a little wobble beginning in the bearings.

Also, I've used a 5' rotary cutter behind it mowing some really nasty, overgrown fields. It does fine. The rough ride was more of a deterrent to my mowing speed than lack of power. I leave the top arm off of my 3PH when I use the rotary mower. The arms will lift the mower but the front is almost off the ground and it's probably more weight than the arms are rated for lifting. I just let the mower run on the rear tire and vary the height I'm cutting at with the lower arms.

To answer another posters question.

I've always been able to call my local Kubota dealer and have never had a part that they couldn't get. Great thing is, I've hardly ever needed any. That little tractor has been awesome! I'll be using it today. :)

This is obviously an old thread but here is some info on the B5100. Tractordata shows them to be available in FWD, engine HP 12, PTO 10.
