Can't seem to get this tractor to start up. Here is what I have had done so far:

- fuel injector pump serviced and calibrated;
- fuel injectors serviced
- new glow plugs
- fresh fuel
- new fuel filter

When I crank on it, I don't even get a pop but I get white smoke from the exhaust. I have bled the line and I am getting fuel to the injector pump and the injectors. The battery on the tractor is dead so am jumping from my truck. I checked the return line and it is clear. It seems to take about 30 seconds for the glow plug light to light up (and its not that bright). Is this good or bad? The diesel service that fixed my injectors said that the glow plugs, when hooked up to a 12V battery should light up from the tip. My old ones would light up from the middle then down to the tip which he said was not good (would never reach the heat needed), however I noticed that my news ones do the exact same thing (it takes about 20 seconds to start lighting and then reach the tip).

So I am thinking my glow plugs aren't lighting up at all or good enough (but would the dash light come on?), or my timing is off. I may need to take one of the shims out.

Any other ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks.

The white smoke is probably atomized unburned fuel. You didn't mentioned the running condition of the tractor before...was it running and running well? If it was then I'd rule out the timing for now, but something to check. Glow plugs just help heat up the air and that's all. I would let the plugs heat up good, then put another battery on it or hook up a battery directly, any way to get the cranking speed up. Another usualy suspect is the valve settings (staying open), then a compression test, how many hours on this tractor.

It was in the 50's in east Texas this weekend, normally no glow plug is needed. When I cranked it spit out white but caught on without the plugs. As it gets cooler I'll use the plugs every time, just easier on the starter...

Good Luck

Thanks. I bought the tractor a few months ago. It is in great shape but I don't know how many hours are on it, so I had the fuel injector pump and injectors serviced. When I got the machine I got it from a guy who got it in on a trade for a newer tractor. The owner said it wouldn't start and I got it with certain parts dissassembled.

I am leaning towards it being a timing issue (since it doesn't need the glow plugs to kick over) or there may be air in the line. I am going to bleed the line again. I tried to start it from my truck battery (more juice) with the decompression lever on or off. Of course it spins faster but still no start.

If it doesn't start this weekend, I may just send it to the dealer down the road here and have them look at it. I am at a loss.

Thanks.

More info great!! Check the decompression lever to make sure it is fully disengauging when in the off position. I think you mentioned shims in the pump, so I'm guessing the injection pump is cam driven instead of gear driven. Much harder to get a gear out of time. The cam driven one usually have shims and/or slots to move the pump(up and down...slots, in and out...shims). Usually easier to check the timing, slide it one way or the other and you should get something out of it. Maybe close as in handgernades...:) Sorry I didn't look up your model to get more info. Oh the glow plugs won't affect it "kicking over", or "cranking". Just heats up the air to start better, IE when you crank an engine you are just turning it over, some use crank for start. Sorry old mechanic here.

If you got it in pieces then it could be almost anything. Try moving the pump up and down in the slots if you have them, keep us posted.

Good Luck,
Rob

Thanks. Yea I get the whole cranking and kicking over thing - haha - no problem. It has a cam setup which uses shims. When I got the machine the fuel injector pump was out of it (since it wouldn't start the previous owner probably tried to tinker with it). So I put both of the shims that it came with, in it (since it looked like they were both used previously). This weekend I will take one off and see if I get anything.

Thanks
