How does the 4WD work on this tractor? Should the tractor be locked into 4WD all the time? Thanks!

I normally leave mine in 2WD. I was told that in 4WD it will not turn as well and will rip up the lawn more. My experience is that this is not totally true. In fact in 2WD on slippery grass I have spun my tires and caused some nice skid marks - putting it in 4WD got me going with no damage. When I am off the lawn I do use 4WD most of the time especially when using the FEL to get into the piles of crush for my driveway.

So, no I do not leave it in 4WD.

You should use the 4wd when you need it and leave the tractor in 2wd when you don't. You will learn more about this as you use your new tractor for a bit...every property is a little different. Some attachments "like" the tractor to take advantage of 4wd for better performance.

For example, I generally do not mow with 4wd engaged, but slip it on when I am dealing with the bank near the road for extra traction and safety. It's on for FEL work, however.

I afree with jbecker. You probably won't hurt it in 4WD as long as you stay off hard dry surfaces like pavement, but you can hurt it there.

What about the differential lock?

Can it be used, ie locked or not locked, in 2WD?

Can it be used, ie locked or not locked, in 4WD?

Sorry if these are basic questions, however I am a newbie. Just curious how the diff lock works and when it should be used. THANKS!

I've spum my tires in 4WD tried the diff lock and have still spun my tires until I went into low gear to get going. So, you can use it in either 2WD or 4WD. The setup guy didn't think too highly of the option. I will see what I think after a season of snow blowing, I only have about 20 hours on my machine.

The diff lock can be used in 2 or 4wd. When engaged you should be going straight and not in a turn. I agree with Bird that leaving in 4wd is fine while not on hard surface such as a road.

dmnsmith2,

Yes, the differential lock can be used in 2WD or 4WD. I'm thinking that if you need the differential lock in 2WD you might as well put the tractor in 4WD too.

One important thing: Do not engage the differential lock while the wheels are spinning! From what I understand, there is a pawl engagement system for the differential lock and engaging the pawls while things are turning can break them. And it's probably an expensive repair. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I leave my B7800 in 2WD most of the time. There are certain areas of the property that require 4WD, however, like the sandy washes, and getting in and out of the washes. For these, I always stop and switch, and then switch back when I'm out.

The pedal that locks the rear is handy for quick traction.
