First, what is the minimum number of hours to change the engine oil without wasting money? For example is there any benefit in changing the oil at 10 hours? Also would you change the filter as well at your suggested hours, or just empty the oil out of it?

Second, what is the little trap door in the top of the hood for (just a little forward of the fuel cap)?

I would believe changing the oil before recommended hours would be a waist of money. Unless there was reason for changing oil such as working very hard for many hours, contaminated, or repair that warrented. Yes I would change filter with any oil change also.

NO clue.

I have a 7800 and performed the first oil change a little shy of 40 hours. I asked the dealer about changing it early and he didn't recommend any earlier than that. When I did it, I had in the back of my mind that I would likely do it again at 100 hrs so as not to stretch the 2nd change too long. He did say the first change was important. The cost of oil changes is not that big of a deal for me because I don't put that many hours on my machine. At any rate, I think the most important thing is not to go too long. More frequent changes are likely of little benefit to your machine, it just makes us feel better.

I like my 7800 and it is a good worker, very capable for its size. Hope you enjoy yours.

Ben

Thanks Ben, yup I am enjoying it. I'm thinking I'll do it before Winter. I'll probably have 20-25 hours on it at that point. Any idea what the door in the top of the hood is for? My only guess is maybe for a vertical exhaust mod.

I THINK I saw in the manual for mine a guideline of 100 hours......But not 100% sure. I know that big truck diesels that run turbos go a good many miles before oil changes, and turbos subject the oil to more heat. I would guess a non turbo diesel ought to be fairly easy on oil.;)

First oil change is 50 hrs. Thats not a trap door on the hood.

I wondered about that covered hole in the hood too. I think they use the same hood as on the smaller B series with the 3 cylinder engines (e.g. B2410), and on these the fuel tank ends up under the hood and they have a shorter cowl section (where the B7800 fuel tank is).
I just looked at a B series brochure dated March '03, and the B2410 fuel cap appears to be at that hole in the hood

We change the oil in all of our equipment every spring and most of the time the oil still has low hours on it. Dad says over the winter oil can accumulate water so every spring we'd be changing oil.

I don't know if that's true or not but after doing it for so long and never had having an engine/oil related problem I still do it anyway since oil is cheaper than parts.

Yes I would change the filter with every oil change up to 300hrs then every other change.

edit ...of coarse the oil also gets change at reg intervals too.
