Can any one explain the "real" difference between these two tractors, they appear to spec out very close. Why would Kubota, manufacture two tractors that are so similar? Are or have they discontinued one of them?

The B-7800 will take mid and front mount attachments and the L-2800 won't. To me that is the biggest reason to buy one over the other.

Ok, I'll bite.

The 2 tractors are very different. One is a "B" series and the other is a "L" . The L2800 is a heavier, larger tractor. The B is lighter, with more HP. (30 vs 28.5)
I believe you can get a mid pto on the L but it is an option. Mid & rear PTO is standard on all B series tractors.

Here is a link to a post I put up here with an chart describing some of the differences between some of the B & L series tractors.

It might be better if you describe WHAT it is yo want to do with the tractor & I'm sure folks here could direct you to the appropriate machine, B or L series.

I believe the B's are hydros and L is a gear tractor.

They make an HST transmission in the L series now.

they also make (or did make) gear driven "B" series tractors.

Both the L & B series are avail with gear or hst trannies.

Mid PTO standard on B, and optional on L and Grand L. Kubota's web site DID list a front snowblower for the L series a while back. They do have the front blower listed for the Grand L.

L series weighs considerably more than the B. (~900 lbs + more) Grand L weigh even more, and are larger frame tractors also.

More weight, larger, heavier implements, larger tires, larger physical tractor are in the L's corner.

Lighter weight, smaller implements, more maneuverable are in the B's corner.

Some B series (7510/7610/7800 are "basic" tractors. Some (2630,3030 are "deluxe" tractors. All L series are "basic" tractors. All Grand L series are "deluxe" tractors.
Some "Basic" tractors lack position control on 3pt (at least on the B series), telescoping arms on 3pt to make hook-ups easier, sometimes lack the stronger pumps (hydro & PS) of deluxe tractors, have more simple seats (translation ... less comfortable) etc.

B series tractors are design for: Mowing large areas (in field and near house), light brush clearing, light - medium landscaping chores. Snow clearing.

L series are better equipped for: Mowing large (not so smooth) areas (ungraded fields), medium brush clearing, medium landscaping chores, snow clearing (heavier, faster snow removal)

Grand L Mowing fields with larger (7 ft+) mowers, heavy brush clearing, larger landscaping chores etc.

They are really 3 different types of tractor (B,L, Grand L) If the 7880 and 2800 look similar on paper, I suggest you go to your local dealer and look at them in person. You will see 2 totally different machines.

I don't think mid PTO is available on the L2800 and L3400.

Every spec on both of these machines is at Kubota's site...

Kubota's site is a little confusing. On the tractor page it says "L serise 31hp to 59hp" but the L2800 is only 29HP. There is no mention of a mid PTO and when you go to attachments it just has "new model coming" or something like that for a snowblower. I asked my dealer about this and he didn't think you could get a front snow blower for the "L"s. I have seen used ones listed with a mid PTO though. I would like the extra weight of the L over the B but my main reason for getting a tractor is to remove snow. Since I have a half mile of twisty driveway to clear a rear mount is out of the question. I currently use a dump truck with a 10' plow but when we got over 3 feet in one dumping I want a backup as well as a way to remove the snow once the snowbanks get built up. If anyone knows for sure about the mid PTO on the L2800 please let me know. Also I think the B7800 is only offered in HST.
