Which tractor have more pulling power?

I'm about to get a B7800. Primary use is to drag a boxscraper and some loader work. Salesman at the dealership said L2800HST will work much better for these tasks and can pull a bigger boxscraper. I thought the B7800 has 30HP and the L2800 is a basic tractor with only 28HP but cost $1000 more. The L2800 is heavier with less HP. It's 28HP has to carry an extra 600lb of it's own weight. Please help me understand why it can drag a bigger boxscraper with less HP? Thanks.

Edit: I re-read the specs. The L2800 also has 30 gross HP except it's heavier.

horsepower is not what will allow using the box scraper and /or loader, traction is, and the L2800 will provide much better traction. Either tractor will spin the wheels long before it uses all of its 28 or 30 horsepower.

What crash said. Most small tractors have far more horsepower than they can use.

Fill the tires so you get even more weight. For ground contact work you need weight. I don't think I've ever stopped my b3030 - the wheels spin far earlier.

The L2800 will always out pull a 7800. It wouldn't matter if the 7800 was 50HP. That said, the 7800 should be able to handle a 5' medium duty box blade just fine. However, I can pull a 5' box full of clay with my 2800 and hardly tell its back there.

Weight will help with ground engaging equipment for better pulling. Don't over weight a tractor for pulling a big load if it is a small portion of the work to be done with the tractor. The added weight will increase the fuel being burnt even if you are not pulling the ground engaging tools but just driving in the yard.

Before you start adding the weight figure out how much would be the least you could get by with to get the job done and don't add more.
The weight you add will burn more fuel everytime a wheel turns!

So, it's weight that gave the L2800 more pulling power. If I add 600lbs of weight to the B7800, will it be able to pulling as well as the L2800? (...this just a hypothetical question because I have no idea how to add 600lbs to the B7800)

I guess that would depend on the whole HP vs. Torque thing. I often wondered the same thing. Gearing has to do with it too. Think of it this way, if you put 25 hp engine from a Craftsman riding mower into a 2600 lb. machine, I doubt it would move it up hill.

I just got my L2800 delivered one week ago. The salesman talked me out of the B7800. He said the 3PH worked better on the L2800 than on the B7800, let alone the ability to pull better and a bigger loader (I think). I'm a newbie and its not worth much but the first 4 hrs on my tractor have been heaven.

You made the correct choice since I think you would have always wished you had gone with the larger tractor had you bought the other one. My L2800 is a work horse.

HORSEPOWER = (rpm x torque)/5252

HP is just a number derived by using the above formula. Don't look at HP as work. The number you want to really look at for pulling is TORQUE. A consistant torque, thoughout the RMPs, starting at a low RPM is what you want.
