Considering a purchase of one or the other. Both have HST, pretty much the same specs as I can tell. The B7800 is a little cheaper than the L3400, and uses a spur gear drive rather than a bull gear. Any comments from others as to advantages of one over the other??

The B7800 is a large SCUT, meaning it is of lighter construction and smaller and more nimble than the L3400.

The L3400 is a CUT, meaning it is built heavier and is larger and has greater capabilities (greater3 point lift, higher FEL lift capacity, larger back hoe)

The B7800 is better for smaller acreage.

The L3400 is better for more acreage, need to use large brush hogs, extensive tilling, etc.

My B7800 has been a versatile tractor for me - plowing, discing, planting, spreading, loader work, etc. But, if I were buying another for tillage - plowing - I'd go for the larger heavier L3400. Good luck as you make your choice.:)

My neighbor has a B7800 & likes it very much. He is a building contractor who uses it to dig holes for sono-tubes. He likes it because it is small & nimble enough to get in customers' back yards.

I have the L3400 & I have really enjoyed it too. Sorry I am not much help to you, but both machines are nice.

Does the "Hill" in your name say anything about your land? If you're going to be working sidehills, the heavier tractor will handle better and do a better job of controlling the implement. Both tractors will handle a 5' bush hog. But with the C.G. of the mower nearly 3 ft. behind the 3PH balls, the mower's weight has a long moment arm (lever) through which to influence the tractor. The heavier tractor will resist this and be easier to work with on a sidehill.

Plus, you get Position Control on the L3400 vs. Quarter-Inching on the B7800. Having used both, most people prefer Position Control. It lets you preset implement height/engagement with some degree of accuracy. With Q-I you have to "refind" the sweet spot everytime you lower the implement. However, it's been reported that the Position Control valve on some L3400s leaves a lot to be desired. Before buying, you should test the raise & lower with an implement attached. If it's jerky, you might want to keep looking.

I have a B7800, it's a great little tractor, if I had to do it over I'd get the L3400 at minimum. However, if your mowing a yard the B7800 will leave less of an impact. Both are good tractors, the B is going to be lighter and more nimble, the L will be better for larger tasks, it's heavier duty and can operate larger implements (the B will cost less, and so will its attachments). What are your properties features? How much acreage will you be operating the tractor on, and what do you intend to do with this tractor? Find the exact tractor to meet your needs, and then by one size larger, this is a formula someone else on this forum supplied in another post.

Agree with the general sentiment here.

If you are finish mowing then the B7800 and B3030 models are really nice. Light weight, with a nice MMM package. They will do lots of other things as well. Their compact size makes a better fit for small spaces.

If you have a farm vs. an acerage, and finish mowing is not your primary task then I would opt for a L3400 - or better yet the L3240.

As Bob said, I would brink the jerky valve situation upfront AHEAD of time to ensure that they will make good on a fix if the problem exists. My upgraded valve (this was almost 3 years ago on) is pretty decent. I sure compared to what other tractors in this class have - e.g. CK30 Kioti's valve. I imagine one of the reasons the GLs is smoother than the upgraded L3400s is additional capacity.
