I often mused about backhoe's and what I could use it for around the place. I worry however about the removal and reattachment all the time vs buying a dedicated used backhoe tractor.
I'd be very interested in what current owners of the Montana backhoe attachment have to say and what the price of a backhoe attachment runs (approx.).
Questions like how often do you remove it? How much does it interfere with the 3pt hitch? How do you use it? Is it used in a ranch/farm application?
I own a 4940C so attaching it will extend it out a ways.

Thanks.

Hi Stampeder. When I have customers express an interest in a backhoe I probe a bit to see if the expense is justified. If a person is going to get one to dig a few trenches and some water lines it would be better to rent a mini-ex and be done with it. If a guy has 10 acres with lots of stumps, rocks, ditches to dig then a hoe might be worth the expense. I just alway s like to guide people towards what will save them money and get the work done efficiently.

When you mount a hoe to the 4940C you should have it sub frame mounted, not 3 point. You will lose any use of the 3 point while the hoe is in place. Taking it on and off is not really hard after the first time or two but once you take it off make sure you position it and block it for ease of re-mounting.

You can run this off your remotes for general purpose use around the place but if you want to use it 8 hours a day in and out I would get the supply off the rear remotes and dump the retun directly into the tractor.

You can run a Montana MBH86 on that tractor and it will work incredibly well. This is the exact setup I sold the school district 2+ years ago on a 4940C. As far as a price, just check with the local dealer. Montana, JD, Bushhog, McCormick, ASV (track loaders) and I believe Branson and some others use hoes from Amerequip. They are not cheap but they are very, very good.

Good luck.
