John Deere 410 Backhoe
I have a JD 310 Backhoe Loader and had a problem with diesel getting into the oil. So I took off the injection pump to a mechanic and they rebuilt the pump and calibrated it. I reinstalled it and put in new seals. Now the machine is blowing white smoke and the exhaust. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Does your radiator level ever drop?

Are there settings for "Flow Rate" for the pump?

Timing of the pump?:)

No the readiator level does not drop. I don't know if there are settings for "flow rate" I will call the shop that rebuilt it and ask. How do you adjust the timing of the pump, someone else mentioned that to me as well.

Pump and injectors need to be working in sync. You did have the spray pattern and pop off pressure checked / corrected, right?

White smoke is unburnt diesel. Fuel injected at low pressure or through clogged nozzles won't be dispersed into a fine enough mist to completely burn.

It's either the injectors needing love, or the engine is low on compression.

I'm assuming that you installed the pump with the timing correct. Time too late and it won't all burn.

The shop did do a spray pattern and pop off pressure check. On injector was bad and was replaced the others were fine. We are going to adjust the timing. We can not find any marks and there is only about a 1/4 inch of movement to play with.

I've always found that white smoke meant WATER (antifreeze) in the cylinders. Doesn't take much to cause it.

a 1/4 inch of movement? That's a very lot to be off! Do you have the manual to tell you how to time the pump? It's important to get it perfect.

Not with a diesel. Ever see a mosquito fogger? That's heated but unburnt diesel.

I've saved this nugget and referred to it many times.
Although your rig is not a Kubota, it is a diesel and may benefit from this info.

Kubotas flow chart for probable cause for excessive white exhaust smoke covers the following:

-low compression pressure. cylinders must not exceed 10% difference between cylinders when testing compression
-water in the fuel or improper type of fuel. Drain and replace
-dirty or faulty injectors. Clean or replace
-faulty injection pump of valves incorrectly timed. Reset timing.
-restriction in air intake of exhaust system. Check and service.
-low operating temperature

G'day if it has only happened after you refitted the inj pump then the timing will be out. You really need a manual to tell you how to set it correctly (or a good mechanic to come and set it for you:D) white smoke is a sign of unburnt excess fuel from the timing out , low compression, black smoke is excess fuel that has been burnt i.e heavy load or blocked intake and blue is burnt oil
