Backhoe Backhoe for Cab Tractor - PTO hydraulics?

I am considering a backhoe for my Kubota 3540HSTC cab tractor so I have to eliminate a kubota-brand as the frame mount will not work with the cab. I was think about a Woods BH series with frame mount and am thinking about a PTO hydraulic system as opposed to piping it into tractor. This is to simplify things as I want to install it myself so I don't have to take tractor to dealership and mess with the hydraulics. Anyone care to comment on the benefits or downfalls of the PTO hydraulics?

Benefit : Seperate systems. Moisture in the backhoe system cannot contaminate tractor hydraulics.

Drawback : More expense

You will need an additional reservoir if the backhoe doesn't have one. Finding a place to put it can be a problem sometimes.

I've been researching the same thing. Right now I'm stuck between the Woods and the Taylor Way units. Both are PTO driven but require some fabricating if you want to put it on a subframe. They're both about half the price of the NorTrac bh but you don't get the same digging depth.

Interesting that now Northern is selling a hoe attachment. It seems to be
the same unit that is sold by Montana Tractors, made by Ameriquip, I
suspect. Terribly high price.

Farm tractor, or industrial? Do you have a Category 2 3-pt hitch?

If you go with a subframe-mounted hoe, you will almost certainly have
to build a custom subframe. Hoe vendors will not have a frame for
your tractor, most likely.

I helped a guy with a backhoe for his Case 480 ind tractor, and he used
his cat 2 3PH to mount a Prairie Dog 7.5 hoe using the cat 1 mount that
comes with the hoe. Cat 2 hitches are much stronger that cat 1s, so
a 3PH mount may be OK.

You can find this class of hoe locally for $4500-7500, I would think.

I don't know the difference between subframe and other options, I would want to be able to take it on and off "fairly" easily.
