This image illustrates the standard joystick configuration for our backhoe.

The layout is counter-intuitive, since the boom behaviour is the opposite of what you expect.

A local expertise helped us to shift the hoses for the boom at the valve control unit. A simple modification that takes five minutes to implement, but with a dramatic impact.

We heard that there is a difference in the configuration layout between America and Europe, and that the Chinese manufacturers have copied the Americans. Is that rumour true?

That is goofy, but from what I'm used to, its not just the boom.

Here's my Bradco layout.

It is isn't that bad as long as you have never used one, and have no plans to ever use someone elses here.

There are several different joystick configurations. Not sure how you can call any of them "standard".

Our Cat equipment is different than our John Deere equipment, which is different than the New Holland backhoe I've rented a few times, which is different than....

Replumbing to make it something you are used to is great if you can do it. Or just run it enough to get used to it. At work if I can't switch between a couple different types I wouldn't be of much help.

A manual of the earlier generation of the LW backhoes sold in the US can be found at Pegasus Industries website.
Here we can see another joystick configuration, with the Boom assigned to the left and the Dipper to the right, like the Bradco shown above, but here with the Dipper behaviour opposite.

I wish the configuration was as easy to to as within the TENSTAR DIGGER - Excavator Simulation software.

However, if it now is as easy as just switching the two hoses for the boom within the control valve unit, thereby conforming to the behavior of common Swedish/European diggers, we think it's certainly worth the five minutes of modification.

Matching the digging simulator to the real world behaviour of the backhoe is most important. We can recommend this free demo simulation software for beginners like us, to familiarize with the controls and operating a backhoe. It helped us vastly to get up to speed with our new purchase. However, with the glitch that our Chinese LW-7 backhoe boom configuration was reversed, but that's now modified with re-routing two hoses.

Bought my JD unit used and hadn't operated a hoe in 30 years. Found it very hard to re-learn until a buddy who used hoes all the time came over to see it. He then explained that there was a difference between Cat and JD and proceeded to switch a few lines. Now I don't even have to stop and think about what to move where, it just seems natural.
When I get on a big old Case hoe with the 6 lever system my brain does start to smoke for the first hour though.....

i've just got a little backhoe behind my tractor, but i'm used to the left stick running the boom and left/right, and the right operating the dipper and curl. i can guarantee there would be a few bangs, scrapes, and crunches if i hopped on one that was set up different. :D
