Hi all. I have searched and can't find any info on this...

Can you mount a 3 point backhoe to a quick hitch?

I have a John Deere 4600 with a 3 point backhoe made for a much smaller tractor. I went smaller to increase the safety factor and reduce the chance of damaging the tractor. My concern is that if I can get the quick hitch to accommodate the backhoe, will it become a weaker link than a typical installation to 3 point arms.

The top link currently with the 3 point backhoe is about an inch thick piece of steel with holes in it. Obviously the top link with a quick hitch is the threaded variety. I am concerned that it may not be as strong as the backhoe's current steel piece.

I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts that have actually tried this. Thanks!

Been a long time since I used a 3pt backhoe. Don’t think they are made anymore? Better than a shovel but still poorly designed and poorly functional digger. Operator safety and equipment damage main concerns. Would think a quick hitch would only exaggerate the problems.

Appreciate your effort in trying to engineer a better fix. You may innovated a better solution. Backhoes really need more close, frame mounted attachment points. Be careful.

For your convenience your BH is made to be quickly detached so you can use your drawbar to safely tow.

Personally I would not. The quick hitch moves the backhoe that much further out and creates even more leverage working on your tractor. And three point mount backhoes already to put a lot of stress on the tractor to begin with.

I had a old Woods 1050 3pt backhoe on my Kubota L3010. It did not perform well with the 3pt mount and eventually broke the transmission housing where the top link attaches. It's hard to imagine a quick hitch would stand the strain without breaking something.

I had a 3-point backhoe for a very short while. Dug a test hole with it, then sold it.

In retrospect I kind of wish I'd kept it, but would have mounted it to a trailer instead.

Still may try that, but with a small tractor with a backhoe, because it could make it easier to clean out irrigation ditches. Having a 102" trailer straddle the ditches is a lot easier than doing it with a relatively narrow tractor.

I remember seeing a 3PH backhoe. I think it was sold by Northern Tool. I almost bought one. It was QH compatible and self-contained. It used a PTO shaft to drive its own hydraulic pump. I questioned the strength of my QH as I recall and didn't purchase it.

Had a John Deer 8A backhoe that was for skid steers with the quick hitch I converted it to 3 Point hook up but also had two 3/4 inch threaded rods attached to the frame of the tractor to off load the attachment points Worked really well, in fact broke the arm of the backhoe on some big rocks and welded it up and used it for years
