On a Kubota Cab tractor, is it necessary to get off the backhoe and climb in the cab for moving the tractor while trenching?

I can't speak for every Kubota model but the four I owned with a hoe, cab or no cab, required dismounting the hoe and getting back on the tractor to move it. The exception was my little B7100HST which I could move from the hoe seat via a rod I cobbled and attached to the HST pedal.

What model are you looking at?

It seemed one of the newer Kubota TLB combinations had a creep feature on the backhoe for moving the tractor. I wonder why if the grand series have electrical pedals why they couldn’t add a switch to the backhoe to allow for movement. I wonder if something could be wired up to achieve this?

I've been thinking of clamping a piece of half inch rebar to the treddle of my MX5800 and bending it so it could be reached from the seat of the hoe.
When trenching on level ground, I mostly just leave the tractor in neutral and move it with the hoe. A little tricky to do on slopes though.

Thanks for clarifying. I am weeks away from pulling the trigger on an Excavator and wanted to make sure all my thoughts were valid. I can see where they would be useful on occasion though.

Depending on how far I'm trying to move, I lift the stabilizers and reach around to the loader lever and lift just enough so I can skid along with the BH. A bungee on the steering wheel holds the direction. I did a 300 ft trench with minimal mounting/dismounting. The hoe lifts the back for small side shifts.

Edit: My L5450 has a full cab with back window detachable for BH operation (head fits under roof). The backhoe can dig a 2' flat spot at 11' depth and has 14' max reach. Newer units fall short of these numbers.

Can the same be done on a cab tractor? I don't think my rear window would open enough to sit under on the backhoe seat. Could be wrong. I frequently am. :)

It all depends on which model tractor you have. Most smaller tractor backhoe attachments require you to climb off the tractor and climb onto the backhoe.

TLB's like the M59 and M62 have a swivel seat so you never have to climb off the tractor to use your backhoe.

The small backhoe attachments are a nice hand shovel replacement for occasional work. If you plan on doing a lot of backhoe work you will start to hate having to constantly climb up and down every time you need to move the tractor.

I have been doing a bunch of trenching lately with a Ditch Witch RT12 I bought a few years ago. With a 6" chain it still a lot of work to set 4" PVC. I have considered a backhoe for my L5740 but it just seems wrong to have to get out of the climate controlled cab to dig. I have finally decided to get a dedicated digger. KX040 looks like a sweet choice for me. Planning to rent one soon and confirm my feelings. Thanks for all the input folks.

Having a compact tractor designed with a factory cab and backhoe fully integrated to work well together would be really something, but it would probably require a "fundamental transformation", as somebody once said. Would probably cost mega-money getting it all figured out, and then it would be a gamble if it would draw enough business to make it worth doing. How much extra would it be worth to have a one-seat, easy-on/easy-off backhoe setup with fully-integrated cab? The Kubota commercial TLB's are already premium machines, so the pricetag would probably go up from there.
