Are there any cons to the pto powered units vs the tractor hydraulics units, thanks for replies

IMHO.. pto powered units are faster as they spec a pump a good size for the hoe.. vs the shared, possibly low volume hyds on the tractor.

for instance.. I have a woods 6500 on my old ford 850. while I could have used the anemic 4gpm setup on my ford I'm sure it would have been abysmal, and engine would be screaming.. howeve rthe pto pump is high volume, and I can leave the tractor at a fast idle and have PLENTY of flow to dig without the engine taking off like a jet palne.

that's a 'BIG' tractor and has a good volume.

Cost... the pump, added plumbing and reservoir tank add a fair amount to the price of the backhoe. It's also a bit easier to just hook up the quick connects instead of mounting a 30-40 lb pump on the pto shaft when attaching the BH. Worth it though for the advantages Soundguy mentioned.

wow.. 30-40# pump.. that would be impressive!! my woods 6500 has a pump the size of a grapefruit. might weigh 5# ?? has a quick coupler to slip on the pto shaft, and a chain to hook over tot he side of the drawbar hanger to keep the pump from spinning around.

Well, I haven't weighed the darn thing, but it's way more than 5 lb and it sure feels like 30 lb just lifting it... although I'll admit my judgement might be influenced just slightly by the awkwardness of reaching in to mount it on the pto when there's not enough clearance to squeeze my, er, chunky frame between the backhoe and the tractor. Here's a photo... more than a grapefruit... maybe a healthy sized cantalope.

I was of course, refering to MY pump, as this was an in general question.. my pump is physically smaller than yous I can tell from just looking.

also.. not sure of your hoe.. but that looks bigger than a woods 6500

This thread definitely has the potential to go downhill very quickly, no fault to the OP. I promise to behave. :D
