I recently got a 4410 with a 48 backhoe. It has R4 tires on it. On the hoe there are two small steps. For the 43XX-44XX series the steps are not very useful as they are in behind the tires.

I have not used the hoe that much so far. The other evening I was digging and I needed to move forward and noticed a rubbing noise. The right tire was rubbing against the step on the hoe. It was not rubbing much but enough that I wanted to figure out what changed.

The hoe appears to be mounted ok. The mounting pins are in place. Since it was dark I was not able to look down and see if the lower part of the hoe was still firmly in it's mounting slots. I started thinking about that cause at one point while digging I lowered the boom instead of raising it and the tractor bounced a bit. Still getting the hang of operation. I'm going to check the lower mount point tonight and then unmount the hoe and make sure the mounting plates on the back of the tractor are firmly in place. In the garage sitting level there is what I would say a normal but small gap between the step on the left tire. On the right the step is very close if not touching the right tire.

The steps are not useful for me so I guess I could trim them off a bit but I wasn't sure I wanted to do that since it is brand new. The tires are only scuffed a bit. I have a message into my dealer about the issue. Wondering if other have had this problem?

Hey, I assume that your r4's are set at their widest? Should anyone EVER assume? They are listed as two position. My R1s are all the way out, and of course there is loads of room. (R1s get 6 positions)

I had the same issue with my 4300 once I put on the "oversize" r-4s from a 4310. There is enough side to side slop in the backhoe mount to let the steps touch the tires if the hoe slides all the way to one side or the other even if the tires are in the wide position. Nothing a quick adjustment with the sawzall couldn't fix. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Like you mentioned, the steps are pretty useless on 43-44xx tractors with R-4s anyway.

I got a chance to look at the hoe this evening. That was the problem. The hoe shifted to one side of the mount and the tire rubbed. Not sure if I put it on that way or it shifted while using it. I dropped the hoe off and mounted it again and it was centered. While it was off a trimmed off a bit of eash step where the angle is. It gives me a bit more clearance and should solve the problem when it shifts again. Thanks for the comments.

I have the same set up and have not run into any of the problems yet. I have had the hoe on and off about 7 times so far. I use the steps. I will try to remember to take pic this weekend.

I had the same problem with the steps rubbing on the rear tires of the 48 hoe on our 4400 with R4"s. What I did to stop the rubbing was to re-mount the steps so they swing out to the rear of the hoe. If you look at where each step is bolted on you will see another mounting threaded hole. Flip the steps over and use this other theaded mounting hole. This will stop the rubbing and the steps will still be usable.
