My little Kioti backhoe has a tough time with some larger roots as do most compact machines. I didn't want to have to change the bucket out and put a ripper on and take it off. Now I can just saw through the roots, or weaken them enough that the backhoe can break them. Thicker steel would be nice, but this is what I had.

I like the idea, have you consider thumb?

I like that! Chew at it for a little while until its weakened, great idea.

Could make it from hard steel, such as a blade edge. Seems like it could be designed to clip o to the bucket edge, and just one bolt or pin to retain it.

I have been trying to get BXpanded to make me a thumb for over a year now. I don't like the Bro Tek idea of having to store an extra top link when the thumb is folded. I'm not wild about the weld on, but I may have to go with the MIE version. I may just design my own.

An old blade edge would be great to use as long as you can cut it. I only had hand tools to use. It works better than I thought, but I will probably use thicker steel next time.

Like that idea. I'm even lazier, I have 2 chunks of flat bar notched out, I push the pallet forks together, tack weld to to the forks. Then you can dig and push the forks into the ground ripping the roots loose. Work your way around the tree then just push the stump over. blow the welds off with the torch grind it smooth. In my case necessity is the mother of invention. Didn't have the hoe when I came up with it. Got the hoe, tied it, fork method still faster. Makes less of a hole also.

Pallet forks are on my list of must haves!

Good Idea I guess. You said little machine, I see way more time unstucking that than just getting into the hole with a sacrificial chainsaw blade and cutting the roots loose.

I have tried both this and the chainsaw, and use both. On roots less than 6" in dia, using the teeth on the bucket is way faster. Larger than 6" and I may as well climb down and cut them with the saw. Chain only lasts for about 4 cuts in my soil here. Carbide chain is too expensive!

Had the forks before the hoe, got real good at making due. Can actually dig a nice trench about 10" wide and 3' deep with them. When I have to trench for electrical conduit, the forks due a better job and are easier. The hoe is nice for when I hit a rock and there are lots of those. To get below frost depth have to use the hoe. If I had to do over I would put the money in a mini excavator.

My version of a tree/post puller also used to dig up roots and stumps, pull down low hanging branches, pick up most anything without getting out of the tractor too. The other day there was a soccer ball in a large ditch, me being to lazy to get out of the tractor and fish the ball, I just roll the front of the tractor down into the ditch and used the post puller to retrieve the ball, LOL. This is my favorite attachment and I built it myself for under $300.
