Well, Now that I've got the tractor (Ford NH 1920 w/Backhoe) I've had the chance to get out and start digging the trenches for my power and water. The bucket on the hoe is a 12" which is OK for the water line trench but I needed 18" wide and 36" deep for the power lines. This had me scraping the sides to widen the trench and took a little more time but in about 10 hours, I've managed to get 225' trenched - And it's straight! Only another 700 feet of trenhc left. I'll post pictures next week.

Todd,

Does your local code call for 18" on power? I have never heard of that. Any idea what the reason is?

Mark,
I wondered the same thing.

They call for similar dimensions up here. I think that it allows you to keep it off the virgin earth and surround it with a known type of fill all the way around.

Keep the greasy side down.

Yes, unfortunately in California things have run amok! PG&E requires 18x36 but I am pulling 200 amp service to the pad. I suspect it may have been less fo 100amp. The service consists of two side by side pipes for the cable and pull boxes every 200 ' or so. Water only requires 12x18. Oh well. I get to learn how to use my Backhoe and it sure justified the cost to the wife!
